JOURNAL OF PROCEEDINGS

TWENTY-FOURTH ANNUAL SESSION.

WEDNESDAY, JANuary 11, 1871–12 M.

The twenty-fourth annual session of the legislature of the State of Wisconsin began at Madison, the capital of said State, the second Wednesday, being the 11th day of January, 1871.

Pursuant to law, at 12 o'clock, M of said day, the Serate was

called to order by the

Lieutenant Governor, and the roll of

the Senators holding over from 1870, was then called by L. B. Hills, Chief Clerk of last session, and the following Senators from their respective districts appeared and took their seats.

List of Senators elected at the general election held in the State of Wisconsin, on the eighth day of November, 1870:

1st Senatorial District—John H. Jones.

3d do do Lyman Morgan.

5th do do Francis Huebschmann.
7th do do Philo Belden.

9th do do E. S. Miner.

11th do do Wm. M. Colladay.
13th do do Henry S. Magoon.
15th do do Francis Little.
17th do do - Chas. G. Williams.
19th do do ’ Carl H. Schmidt.
21st do do James H. Foster.
23d do do W. W. Woodman.
25th do do William M. Griswold.
27th do do Myron Reed.

I, John S. Dean, Assistant Secretary of State of the State of Wisconsin, do hereby certify that the foregoing is a correct list of members of the Senate of the State of Wisconsin, lected at the general election held on the 8th day of November, 1879, as appears from the certificate of the several clerks of the board of supervisors of the counties comprising the senatorial districts named in the

foregoing list, which certificates are now on file in this office.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed

The names of the new Senators were then called by the Chief Clerk, and

The following Senators, from their respective districts, appeared in their places and answered to their names:

21st Senatorial District—James H. Foster,

23d do do W. W. Woodman.
25th do do Wm. M. Griswold
27th do do Myron Reed. -
29th do do Waldo S. Flint.
31st do do Angus Cameron.
33d do do Satterlee Clark.

And the newly elected Senators came forward and took and subscribed the oath of office, which was administered by the Lieutenant Governor.

ELECTION OF OFFICERS.

On motion of Senator Pratt, The Senate proceeded to the election of Chief Clerk, The roll being called, with the following result: Senators Belden Cameron, Colladay, Davis, Flint, Foster, Griswold, Hill, Hazelton, Jones, Little, Magoon, Miner, Pettit, §. Price, Strong, Town and Williams—19, voting for O. R. mith. Senators Baldwin, Burchard, Clark, Deuster, Huebschman, Ives, Krouskop, Morgan, Reed, Rice, Schmidt, Walker and Woodman—13, voting for A. B. Braley. Mr. Smith having received the highest number of votes was d:clared duly elected Chief Clerk of the Senate. Mr. Smith then appeared at the desk, the oath of office was then administered to him by the Lieutenant Governor, and he entered upon the duties of the office.

On motion of Senator Pettit, The Sena-e proceeded to the election of Sergeant-at-Arms. The roll being called, The following Senators voted for W. W. Baker: Senators Belden, Cameron, Colladay, Davis, Flint, Foster, Griswold, Hall, Hazelton, Jones, Little, Magoon, Miner, Pettit, Pratt, Price. Strong, Town and Williams—19. The following Senators voted for F. W. Hundhausen: Senators Baldwin, Burchard, Clark, Deuster, Huebschmann, Ives, Krouskop, Morgan, Reed, Rice, Schmidt, Walker and Woodman—13. Mr. Baker having received the higlest number of votes was declared duly elected sergeant-at-arms of the senate. Mr. Baker then appeared at the desk, the oath of office was administered to him by the lieutenant-governor, and he entered upon the duties of the office.
