On motion of Mr. Hand, the resolution reported by the committee was adopted, and Mr. Walker came forward, subscribed the constitutional oat, and took his seat.

On motion of Mr. Hazleton,

Resolved, That the committee on ways and means be requested to. report a bill providing for the payment of Linus S. Gilbert, while in attendance on this House, preferring his claim to a seat as a member from the county of Macomb.

On motior. of Mr. Sweeney,

Resolved, That the election of chaplains, as contemplated by the resolution of yesterday, be postponed until to-morrow morning. On motion of Mr. Ames,

The following was taken from the table and adopted:

Resolved, That a committee of three be appointed to revise the rules of this House, and that they report as soon as practicable. The Speaker appointed as such committee, Messrs. Ames, Moran and Blair.

On motion of Mr. Hawley,

The Governor's message was taken from the table, and the follow. ing resolutions adopted:

Resolved, That so much of the Governor's message as relates to the apportionment of Senators and Representatives, be referred to a select committee of five.

That so much as relates to elections, to the committee on elections. That so much as relates to the judiciary, to a reporter of decisions of the supreme and chancery courts; and to the revision of the laws of the state, be referred to the committee on the judiciary.

That so much as relates to banks and incorporations, be referred to the committee on banks and incorporations.

That so much as relates to the State prison, be referred to the committee on State prison.

That so much as relates to the militia, be referred to the committee on militia.

That so much as relates to lands belonging to, or under the control of the state, be referred to the committee on public lands.

That so much as relates to the University, its branches, and common schools, be referred to the committee on education.

That so much as relates to the mineral regions of the Upper Peninsula, be referred to the committee on federal relations.

That so much as relates to the finances of the state, be referred to the committee on ways and means.

That so much as relates to the construction, management and repairs of the works of internal improvement, be referred to the committee on internal improvenient.

Mr. Hand offered the following resolution, which was laid on the table: Resolved, That so much of the Governor's Message, as relates to the sale of the works of internal improvement, be referred to the committee on ways and means.

Mr. A. C. Baldwin offered the following resolution, which was lost:

Resolved, That the committee on supplies and expenditures be instructed to furnish wrapping paper, paste and ink in this house, for the use of members.

The Speaker appointed Justas Ingersoll and William Burt, as mes sengers to this house.

On motion of Mr. Peck,

Resolved, That so much of the Governor's Message as relates to the Geological department, together with the report of the Assistant State Geologist, be referred to a select committee of three.

The Speaker appointed as such committee, Messrs. Peck, Hand, and Ames.

On motion of Mr. Hazelton,

The House adjourned.

The House met pursuant to adjournment, was called to order by the Speaker, and on calling the roll, Messrs. C. Baldwin, Graham, Hawley, Leach, Morse, Ord and Rice were absent.

Mr. Cook asked and obtained leave of absence for Mr. Graham, for an indefinite time, on account of sickness.

By Mr. Toll, of John Sturgis, and other citizens of the township of Sturgis, St. Joseph county, relative to the sale of the public works. Laid on the table.

By Mr. Cook, of J. W. French, and others, of Hillsdale county, for the laying out of a certain state road. Referred to the committee on roads and bridges.

By Mr. Sprague, of H. Willson, for authority to release his claim to certain land. Referred to the committee on the judiciary

By Mr. Wakeman, of the board of supervisors of the county of Jackson, praying the abolition of the criminal court in that county. Referred to the committee on the judiciary.

By Mr. Noble, the claim of Daniel Corbin. Referred to the committee on claims.

By Mr. Barrett, the petition of Joseph G. Farr and 41 other legal voters of Oakland county, for the extension of the right of suffrage to colored citizens. Referred to the committee on the judiciary.

By Mr. Scott, of German citizens of this state, asking the publication of the legislative proceedings in the German language.

Mr. Scott moved to refer the petition to the committee on printing, pending which

Mr. Hazleton moved to refer to the committee on education, which motion was lost, and the question recurring on the motion to refer to the committee on printing, it prevailed.

By Mr. Wakeman, of citizens of Jackson county, in favor of the sale of the public works. Laid on the table.

By Mr. Barbour, of citizens of Calhoun county, asking the extension of the right of suffrage to colored persons. Referred to the committee on the judiciary.

By Mr. Sprague, of one hundred and sixty-three citizens of the township of Quincy, Branch county, asking an amendinent of the revised statutes relative to highways. Referred to the committee on roads and bridges.
