SIXTEENTH EDITION.

The system of "Tactics and Drill" embraced in this work, was the first, as displayed at the "Triennial" in 1868, by Apollo Commandery of Chicago. It has by adoption and general use become indispensable to members of the Order. In the revision of the work, we have examined several systems issued since our first publication, and find them all, with a single exception, based mainly on ours.

In this edition the commands, so far as practicable, have been changed to conform to Upton's military tactics, now in use in the United States army (though the formation by threes," originally introduced as above, is retained), which will readily be learned by those in the Order who have an interest in military affairs. There are many maneuvers added, but not for fancy display, beyond those already introduced, believing that few Commanderies desire to devote the time necessary for their creditable execution, and it seems to be the general opinion that it is impossible for Sir Knights to drill as thoroughly as enlisted infantry men,
