ALKALIES.

Comportment of Alkalies, Earths, and Metallic

I. ALKALIES

Upon Platinum Wire.

When covered with the point of the blue flame, the outer flame is colored violet. A small addition of Soda prevents this reaction..

[blocks in formation]

The flame is colored yellow, although Potassa is present.

3. Lithia.

LO.

If no Soda be present the flame is reddened.

4. Ammonia. N H3.

EARTHS.

5. Baryta.

Upon Charcoal, and with Borax, on the Platinum Wire.

Caustic; infusible. The Hydrate and
Ba O. Carbonate melt, and are absorbed by the
Charcoal.

Hydrate, fusible: the Carbonate, only 6. Strontia. Sr O. partly so. The moist soluble salts redden the reducing flame.

Caustic; not changed. The Carbonate 7. Lime. Ca O. becomes caustic, and emits an intense white light.

The Carbonate is decomposed, and the

8. Magnesia. Mg O. residue emits a strong light, and has an

9. Alumina. Al2 03.

alkaline reaction.

Not changed.

The Carbonate decrepitates, and forms a bead, which is transparent when cold.

Ditto.

With moist soluble salts, the flame is intensely crimson.

Readily dissolved. The Carbonate deflagrates, and forms, when cold, a transparent crystalline glass.

Like Lime; but the bead formed is not so crystalline.

Fuses to a colorless glass, which remains so when cold.

ides, alone, and with Reagents, in the Blowpipe Flame.

D EARTHS.

Upon Platinum Foil.

Remarks.

The only way that Potassa, if contained in a mixture of Potassa and da, can be detected by the Blowpipe, is to fuse a clear bead of Borax th a small quantity of Oxalate of Nickel, upon the Platinum wire, and add the Mixture. If Potassa be present, the brown color of the Nickel ad is changed to blue: a salt of Soda effects no such change.

When in solution, they tinge reddened Litmus Paper blue.

Fuses, with the formation of a dark yellow coating on the surface.

[blocks in formation]

Infusible. On being slightly heated, it violet-amethyst-while

Sesquioxide becomes of a brown color.

[blocks in formation]

Intensely colored :-hot; violet, with a tinge of red, when cold. If a large quantity is present, the globule will be black.

The pink bead comes colorless. Shou the color be very tense, the reduction wi, succeed better upd charcoal with the add tion of a small quantit of Tin.
