The entire number of schools on our rolls, on the 31st December, 1852, was 4,963, including those in operation, those suspended, and those towards the building of which we have promised aid. 5. The following Table shows the number of National Schools, together with the number of children in attendance therein, as specified in our several Reports, to the 31st of December, 1852. From this Return it will be seen, that there has been a steady increase in the attendance at the National Schools every year, except in 1847 and 1849, the decrease in which years is attributable to the causes adverted to in the Reports for those years. The total attendance in 1852 of 544,604 children, ber on the rolls of each school. in the 4,875 schools in operation, gives an average, on the rolls, of 111.71 to each school. Average daily 7. We stated in our last Report, that it was our attendance of pupils, intention, in future, to publish a Return of the average daily attendance at each school, as well as the number on the rolls. It will be seen from the subjoined table, that the total number of children on the rolls for the year 1852 was, 544,604, and the average daily attendance, 282,575, being rather more than one-half of the total number of children on the rolls. * Of the 112 schools struck off the roll during the last year, 101 belonged to the class of Operation Schools. To the remaining 11 schools grants for building had from time to time been awarded, which grants were cancelled for various reasons during the year 1852. As the accuracy of the Returns published by our Alleged inaccuauthority, in our various Reports, of the number of racy in the Rechildren on the rolls, continues to be questioned, we by the Commisdeem it necessary to repeat the statement made in our sioners of the last Report, viz., that “these Returns are furnished to the children on us half-yearly by the Patrons or Managers of the the rolls. schools; that they contain the names of all the children who have been in attendance for any portion of each half-year; and that the names of the Patrons or Managers are affixed to the Returns, certifying that they have examined the class-rolls, and found them to be correct. Whenever a report is made to us by our Inspectors, or other parties, that the lists of attendance in any particular school have been falsified by the Teacher, an inquiry into the facts is ordered ; and if the allegation be proved, we inflict such punishment as the nature of each case demands.” We beg to assure your Excellency, that every precaution is taken by us to furnish our statistical Returns in as correct a form as possible, and that we are at all times desirous of affording the fullest information to Parliament on the progress and working of the National system of Education in all its branches. 9.
