Mr. Childs moved to lay bill No. 16 on the table, until next Wednesday week.

Mr. Engle moved to amend the motion, by striking out" next Wednesday week," and inserting " Monday next."

The question was taken on the amendment, and lost.

Mr. Engle moved to amend the motion, by making said bill the order of the day for Thursday next.

The amendment was lost.

Mr. Teas moved to amend the motion, by making said bill the order of the day for Tuesday next, which was disagreed to.

The question then recurred on the motion of Mr. Childs, and on that question the ayes and nays were called for, and were as follow:

Ayes-Messrs. Boyls, Brunson, Brunet, Childs, Cornwall, Cox, M'Knight, M'Williams, Parkinson, Sheldon, Smith, Shanley, and Sholes-13.

Nays-Messrs. Box, Blair, Chance, Engle, Jenkins, M‘Gregor, Nowlin, Quigley, Reynolds, Teas, Wheeler, and Leffler, speaker.--12.

So the bill was laid on the table until Wednesday week.
The house adjourned.

Monday, December 11, 1837.

Mr. Jenkins presented the petition of inhabitants of Henry county, praying for the passage of an act to remove obstructions to the navigation of Skunk river.-Referred to the following select committee, viz:

Messrs. Jenkins, Teas, Chance, Box, and Blair.

On motion of Mr. Cox,

Resolved, That a committee of six be appointed, to be composed of one member from each of the original counties, on election districts, to take under consideration the apportionment of the members of the House of Representatives.

The following persons were appointed said committee: Messrs. Cox, M Williams, Cornwall, Quigley, Chance, and Brunson.

Mr. M Williams, from the committee on enrolments, reported the following to be correctly enrolled:

No. 9, "An act to establish a university at Green Bay;" No. 19, "An act to enforce the payment of money into the several county treasuries."

They were then presented to, signed by the speaker, and transmitted to the president of the Council for his signature.

Bill No. 9, entitled "A bill to establish a territorial road from the Forty mile Point, &c.," was referred to the following select committee, viz:

Messrs. Nowlin, Reynolds, and M'Knight.

Bill No. 29, entitled "A bill to locate a territorial road from Fort Howard to Fort Winnebago," &c., was then read a second time, and

On motion of Mr. Childs, the different rules were suspended in relation to the said bill, and the following amendments were made:

Sec. 1, in the 3d line, insert "Corwell Pyre;" in the 13th line, strike out "east," and insert "west."

Sect. 2, in the 2d line, strike out "February," and insert "March."

Insert, in Sect. 8, "This act shall take effect from and after its passage."

The bill was then ordered to be engrossed for a third reading.

Bill No. 15, entitled "A bill to provide for the removal of county seats in the territory, and for other purposes," was read a second time, and

On motion of Mr. Shanley, the rule requiring bills to be considered in committee of the whole, on being read a second time, was suspended.

Mr. Cox offered the following amendments: Strike out the word "not," and all after the word " removed," in the 4th line, 1st sec., to the word "and," in the 7th line, and insert instead thereof, the words, "when a majority of the citizens of the county shall deem it expedient:"

Which amendments were agreed to.

On motion of Mr. Shanley,

The bill was indefinitely postponed.

Bill No. 8, Council file, entitled "A bill to locate and establish a territorial road from Fort Howard to Fort Winnebago, on the west side of Fox river, and for other purposes," was then read, and

On motion of Mr. Childs, was laid on the table.

Bill No. 13, Council file, entitled "A bill to establish a county treasurer," was read the third time, passed, and

On motion of Mr. Engle, the title of the bill was amended to read, "A bill to provide for the election of county treasurers, and to define their duties."

Ordered that the Council be informed.

Mr. Childs, by leave, introduced a bill, (No. 50,) entitled "A bill to amend an act entitled an act prescribing the duties of coroners;" which was read the first time, and,

On motion of Mr. Chance,

The rule requiring all bills to be printed before a second reading was suspended, and

The bill was read the second time.

On motion of Mr. Childs,

The 18th rule, requiring bills to be considered in committee of the whole, on being read a second time, was suspended, and The bill was ordered to be engrossed for a third reading. On motion of Mr. Sheldon,

The house resolved itself into a committee of the whole on Bill No. 18, entitled "A bill to abolish imprisonment for debt, and for other purposes."

Mr. Engle in the chair. After some time the committee rose and reported, by their chairman, the bill, with amendments, which were agreed to by the house; and the bill, as amended, was ordered to be engrossed for a third reading.

The following message was received from the Council by their secretary:

"Mr. Speaker,―The Council has concurred in the bill (No. 35,) of this house, entitled, A bill to establish the boundaries of the counties of Lee, Van Buren, Des Moines, Henry, Louisa, Wayne, and Slaughter, to locate the seats of justice of said counties, and for other purposes;' also, 'in the resolution respecting a land office at Madison, and in the amendment made by the house to bill No. 12, Council file, entitled a bill organizing a board of county commissioners in each county in this territory.'

And then he withdrew.

Mr. Engle, from the committee on the judiciary, to which was referred bill No. 12, entitled 'A bill for the partition of the half breed lands, and for other purposes,' reported a substitute therefor, which was read the first time, and laid on the table.

The motion of Mr. Jenkins to reconsider the vote on the following resolution was then taken up:

Resolved, That C. C. Sholes, editor of the Wisconsin Democrat at Green Bay, be employed to print the Journal of this house for the present session, and he be allowed the usual price for the same.

Mr. Engle moved to lay the motion on the table until Wednesday next;

Which was disagreed to.

On motion of Mr. Cox,

The roll was called, and absent members sent for.
Mr. Sholes had leave to withdraw from the house.

The question was then taken on the motion for reconsideration, and on that question the ayes and noes were called for, and were as follow:

Ayes:-Messrs. Blair, Box, Chance, Engle, Jenkins, M'Williams, Nowlin, Quigley, Smith, Wheeler, Leffler, speaker-11. Noes:-Messrs. Boyls, Brunson, Brunet, Childs, Cornwall, Cox, M'Knight, Parkinson, Reynolds, Sheldon, Shanley, and Teas-12.

Bill No. 10, entitled "A bill respecting constables," was then taken up, read the third time, passed, title agreed to, and ordered to be sent to the Council for concurrence.

Mr. Quigley gave notice that he would, at some future day, bring in a bill concerning steamboats.

Mr. Nowlin gave notice that he would, at some future day, introduce "a bill for locating and establishing a road from Dávenport, in Scott county, to Belleview, in Jackson county."

Mr. Teas gave notice that he would, at some future time, bring in a bill to establish a college at Mount Pleasant in Henry county.

Mr. Blair gave notice that he would, at some future day, introduce a bill to establish a ferry on the Mississippi river, opposite Oquawka.

Mr. Cox gave notice that he would, at some future day, bring in a bill to make the several laws of this territory, relative to county government, applicable to the county of Grant. The house then adjourned.

Tuesday, December 12, 1837.

Mr. Teas presented the petition of William Sawtell, praying to be remunerated for services rendered as assessor of Des Moines county,
