Bill No. 113, entitled "A bill to amend an act entitled 'An act to prevent trespasses on school lands,' approved December 9th, 1836," was taken up, and,

On motion of Mr. Parkinson,

The house resolved itself into a committee of the whole on said bill; Mr. Brunson in the chair.

After some time the committee rose, and by their chairman reported said bill without amendment.

Mr. Chance moved to strike out, the word "

wherever it may occur in the bill.

The motion was lost.

On motion of Mr. Childs, an additional section, to be called section 6th, was added, viz:

Nothing in this act shall be so construed as to affect the 16th section or school section, in the county of Brown, and the counties thereto attached for judicial purposes."

The bill was then ordered to be engrossed for a third reading. The 16th rule was then suspended with reference to said bill, which was then read the third time, passed, and the title thereof agreed to.

Ordered to be sent to the Council for concurrence.

Bill No. 108, entitled "A bill to regulate the sale of school lands, and to provide for organizing, regulating, and perpetuating common schools," was taken up.

On motion of Mr. Quigley,

The house resolved itself into a committee of the whole; Mr. Brunson in the chair.

After some time the committee rose, and by their chairman reported the bill with amendments.

The amendments were agreed to.

The bill was then ordered to be engrossed for a third reading. The 16th rule was then suspended with reference to said bill, which was then read the third time, passed, and title agreed to. Ordered to be sent to the Council for concurrence.

Mr. Chance, by leave, introduced bill No. 127, entitled "A bill to incorporate the Iowa Mutual Fire Insurance Company, at Burlington," which was read the first time, and laid on the table.

Thursday, January 11, 1838.

Mr. Sheldon presented the petition of sundry citizens of Racine county, praying for the incorporation of a company to construct a rail road from the village of Racine, westerly, to Rock river.

Referred to a select committee consisting of

Messrs. Sheldon, Cornwall, and M'Williams.

Mr. Cornwall presented the petition of sundry citizens of Walworth county, praying for the passage of an act to authorize the survey of a rail road from South Port on Lake Michigan, to some point on Rock river, at or near Janesville.

Referred to committee on internal improvements.

Mr. McWilliams, from the committee on enrolment, reported the following acts to be correctly enrolled, viz:

"An act to incorporate the stockholders of the Banks of Racine and Iowa."

"An act to locate and establish the seat of justice of Jefferson county."

"An act to incorporate the Racine Seminary."

"An act to amend an act, entitled 'An act to incorporate the Fox river Hydraulic Company."

"An act to incorporate the Root river Rail Road Company." "An act to amend an act, entitled 'An act to incorporate the La Fontaine Rail Road Company.'

"An act to authorize John Dowling and James Sproule to erect a toll bridge across the west fork of the Pecatonica

river."

The said acts were then presented to, signed by the speaker, and

Ordered to be transmitted to the president of the Council for his signature.

Mr. Chance, from the select committee to which the subject was referred, reported

"A memorial to Congress for an appropriation for the laying out and opening a road on the west side of the Mississippi river, from the point on the river opposite Prairie du Chien, to the northern boundary of the State of Missouri."

The following message was received from the Council by their secretary:

"Mr. Speaker, The Council have amended the amendment of this house, to a resolution of the Council in relation to the printing of the laws, as follows, viz:

"To strike out all after the words that the,' and insert 'printing of the laws passed at the present session of the legislative assembly, in pamphlet form, be given to Messrs. James Clarke & Co., of this place, and that they be instructed to have the same ready for distribution on or before the 15th day of May next.'

"The Council have also adopted a memorial to Congress for a donation of inundated land' in Illinois, to be sold, and the proceeds to be applied to the making of roads and bridges through the same;

"In which amendment and memorial, I am directed to ask the concurrence of this house.

"The Council have concurred in bills of this house of the following titles, viz:

"No. 109, a bill to divorce Louisa Ann Sibley from her husband William T. Sibley.'

"No. 123, a bill to divorce Martha Newton from her husband John C. Newton.'

"No. 124, a bill to divorce Abraham Jones and Lucinda Jones from the bonds of matrimony, and for other purposes,' without amendment; and in bills

"No. 17, a bill to authorize Jean Brunet to establish a ferry across the Wisconsin river.'

"No. 28, a bill to establish a ferry across the Mississippi and Grant rivers.'

"No. 49, a bill to establish a ferry across the Mississippi river at Cassville.'

'No. 52, a bill to authorize Thomas P. Burnet and Alexander M'Gregor to establish a ferry across the Mississippi river.'

"No. 86, A bill to establish a ferry on Rock river, at Janesville, in Rock county.'

“No. 105, ‘A bill to incorporate the stockholders of the state bank of Wisconsin, at Prairie du Chien,' with amendments thereto;'

"In which I am directed to ask the concurrence of this house. "The Council have passed bills of the following titles, viz: "No. 64, A bill to authorize Levi Moffet to keep a ferry across Skunk river, at Moffet's Mill.'

"No. 65, A bill to amend an act entitled, 'An act concerning the supreme and district courts, and defining their jurisdiction and powers;'

"In which I am directed to ask the concurrence of this house :"

And then he withdrew.

Mr. Nowlin, from the select committee to which the several bills establishing territorial roads were referred, reported bill No. 128, entitled "A bill to lay out and establish the several territorial roads therein named.”

Mr. Shanley, from the select committee to which bill No. 33, entitled "A bill to regulate weights and measures was referred, reported

Bill No. 129 as a substitute therefor.

Mr. Quigley, from the select committee, to which bill No. 103, entitled "An act to amend an act entitled, 'An act to establish the boundaries of the counties herein named, and for other purposes,' was referred,

Reported the same back to the house without amendment, and asked the adoption of the following resolution :

Resolved, That the bill entitled, "An act to amend an act entitled An act to establish the boundaries of the counties

herein named, and for other purposes,' postponed.

," is hereby indefinitely

On the question, "Shall the resolution be adopted?" the yeas and nays were called for, and were as follow:

Yeas:-Messrs. Blair, Childs, Cornwall, Chance, Engle, M'Williams, Quigley, Sheldon, Smith, Sholes, Wheeler-11. Nays:-Messrs. Box, Boyls, Brunson, Brunet, Cox, Jenkins, M'Knight, Nowlin, Parkinson, Reynolds, Shanley, Teas, and Leffler-13.

Mr. Chance, by leave, introduced bill No. 130, entitled "A bill to provide for the sale of land on which the seat of justice of Henry county is located," which was read the first time, and laid on the table.

Mr. Sheldon, by leave, introduced bill No. 131, entitled "A bill to prevent trespass and other injuries being done to the possessions of settlers on the public domain, and to define the extent of the right of possession on the said lands," which was read the first and second times.

On motion of Mr. Sheldon,

The house resolved itself into a committee of the whole on said bill; Mr. Blair in the chair. After some time the committee rose, and by their chairman reported said bill with an amendment.

The amendment made in committee was agreed to, and the bill was ordered to be engrossed for a third reading.

The 16th rule was then suspended with reference to said bill, which was read the third time, passed, and the title agreed to. Ordered to be sent to the Council for concurrence.

Bill No. 119, entitled "A bill to establish the several ferries herein named," was read the first and second times.

On motion of Mr. Chance, the house resolved itself into a committee of the whole on said bill; Mr. Cox in the chair. After some time the committee rose, and by their chairman reported the progress made therein, and asked leave to sit again. Leave was granted.

The house adjourned till 3 o'clock, P. M.
