JOURNAL At 11 o'clock in the forenoon, on the first Wednesday of January, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and ninety-seven, being the day prescribed by the constitution for the Legislature of New Hampshire to assemble, the follow- ing-named persons, elected Senators, assembled in the capitol, in the city of Concord in said state, and His Excellency the Governor, attended by the Honorable Council, having come into the senate chamber, took and subscribed the oaths of office, and were duly qualified as Senators, agreeably to the From District No. 9-Willis G. Buxton. 10-Gardner B. Emmons. 11-James G. Fellows. 12-Albert Wallace. 13-Frederic A. Faulkner. 14-Lemuel F. Liscom. 15-Charles Scott. 16-Loring B. Bodwell. 17-Zebulon F. Campbell. 18-Timothy J. Howard. 20-Nathaniel Wentworth. 21-Rufus E. Graves. 22-John T. Welch. 23-Frank H. Durgin. 24-John W. Emery. His Excellency the Governor and the Honorable Council then withdrawing, the Senate was called to order by Edward H. Wason, clerk of the Senate of last session. The clerk stated that the first business was the selection of a temporary presiding officer. On motion of Senator Cheney, Senator Faulkner was chosen temporary presiding officer. The clerk requested Senators Kenrick and Howard to conduct the temporary presiding officer to the chair. On motion of Senator Howard, it was unanimously voted that Senator Greenleaf cast one ballot for the Hon. Chester B. Jordan as president. Senator Greenleaf cast one ballot and Hon. Chester B. Jordan, having a majority of all the votes cast, was declared elected president. The chair requested Senators Scott and Emery to conduct the President to the chair.
