It becometh us as a poople to acknowledge our dependence upon Divine Providence, and to return thanks for the many blessings which have crowned the year. The custom is hallowed by the usage of many generations. I do therefore appoint THURSDAY, THE TWENTY-SIXTH DAY OF NOVEMBER, instant, to be observed by the people of this State as a day of THANKSGIVING AND PRAISE TO ALMIGHTY GOD. Let us on that day enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and inte His courts with praise, for surely goodness and mercy hath followed us, bestowing upon us an abundant measure of health, granting us plentiful harvests as the reward of the labors of the husbandman, and continuing unto us the inestimable blessings of civil and religious liberty. Most of all, should we ever render fresh Thanksgivings, for the_gift of grace and the hope of Heaven, revealed unto us through our Lord Jesus Christ. Let us not forget "the fatherless and the widow," that they may "eat and be satisfied, that the Lord thy God may bless thee in all the work of thine hands which thou doest." Given under my hand and the Seal of the State, in the Executive Chamber, at Montpelier, this third day of November, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-eight, and of the Independence of the United States the ninety-third.
