The PRESIDENT appointed Messrs. Wall and Jones to escort Mr. Johnstone to the Bar of the Senate where the oath of office was administered to him by the PRESIDENT.

ELECTION OF CLERK

Mr. RICHARDSON nominated Mr. James H. Fowles, of Columbia, as Clerk.

Mr. MARTIN and Mr. R. D. McDONALD seconded the nomination of Mr. Fowles.

There being no further nominations, the ASSISTANT CLERK called the roll of the Senate and the Senators voted viva voce as their names were called, resulting as follows:

Mr. Fowles having received a majority vote, was declared elected Clerk of the Senate for the term provided by law. He appeared at the Bar of the Senate and the oath of office was administered to him by the PRESIDENT.

ELECTION OF READING CLERK

Mr. GRENEKER nominated Mr. Wm. Anderson Clarkson, of Columbia, as reading Clerk.

Mr. WALL seconded the nomination of Mr. Clarkson.

On motion of Mr. SPIVEY nominations were closed and Mr. Clarkson was elected by acclamation.

Mr. Clarkson appeared at the Bar of the Senate and the oath of office was administered to him by the PRESIDENT.

ELECTION OF SERGEANT AT ARMS

The Senate proceeded to the election of a Sergeant at Arms. Mr. MOORE nominated Mr. Ernest McCarter, of Abbeville. Mr. GRENEKER seconded the nomination of Mr. McCarter. Mr. GREENE nominated Mr. H. B. Hendricks, of Easley. Mr. FINDLEY and Mr. R. D. McDONALD seconded the nomination of Mr. Hendrix.

Mr. WISE nominated Mr. T. J. Cunningham, of Chester.

Mr. KIRKLAND seconded the nomination of Mr. Cunningham.

Mr. HAMMOND nominated Mr. Zed Hope, of Columbia.

Mr. STACY nominated Mr. James N. King, of Gaffney.

There being no further nominations, on motion of Mr. HAMMOND, the Senate proceeded to ballot.

The CLERK called the roll and the Senators voted viva voce as their names were called, as follows:

Whereupon, the PRESIDENT declared Mr. H. B. Hendricks, of Easley, elected Sergeant at Arms of the Senate for the term provided by law.

Mr. Hendricks appeared at the Bar of the Senate where the oath of office was administered to him by the PRESIDENT.

ELECTION OF CHAPLAIN

Mr. J. E. McDONALD, Jr., nominated the Rev. J. G. Huggin, of Columbia, for Chaplain of the Senate.

Mr. BEAMGUARD seconded the nomination of Mr. Huggin.

Mr. HARRELSON nominated the Rev. J. W. Wolling, D.D., of Columbia.

Messrs. SHEALY and KIRKLAND seconded the nomination of Dr. Wolling.

There being no further nominations, the CLERK called the roll of the Senate, and the Senators voted viva voce as their names were called, and the ballot resulted as follows:

ELECTION OF STANDING COMMITTEES

Mr. SPIVEY moved that Rule No. 19, requiring the Senate to vote viva voce to elect a Chairman of each committee severally and then to vote viva voce to elect the other members to complete the same, be suspended, and that the Chairmen nominated for the respective committees all be elected by a single vote viva voce, which was adopted by unanimous vote of the Senate.

Mr. SPIVEY nominated the following Standing Committees, as agreed upon by an informal conference of Senate, which were unanimously elected :
