St. Petersburg, 1862 Tho above is undoubtedly not only one of the most valuable, but also one of the most beautiful and interesting works ever published on the Inhabitants of any empire. It contains an exact description of the actual state and condition of the various Nations and Peoples comprised in the vast empire of Russia, written by M. T. de Pauly, (Member of the Imperial Geographical Society,) with the aid of MM. D'Erckert, C. Ritter, Prof. Schott, and others, and is founded on official and authentic documents. The illustrations consist of Sixty-two exquisitely coloured plates, executed

from nature by the most competent artists, representing fulllength Portraits, both male and female, and interesting groups, and exhibiting the Costume, Manners and Customs, Sports, &c. of the different Nations and Peoples described. Only a limited number of copies were printed, and the stones destroyed. The above copy measures 13 by 8 inches. In March last a copy realized at Sotheby's £200.
