The Gesta Romanorum was the most popular book of the rude Ages; compiled from the obsolete Latin Chronicles of the Later Roman, or rather German story, heightened by Romantic versions from the Legends of the saints, Oriental Apologues, etc. it strongly affected the body of early English Poetry, and afforded a variety of inventions to Chaucer, Gower, Lydgate, and other Poets.
