Shakespeare's influence was almost exclusively literary, and in this of course he was even to Sir Walter Scott as the sun is to the moon. But Scott's influence in another sphere was greater than Shakespeare's by as much as Shakespeare's in that sphere was greater than his: and the hundredth anniversary of his birth-day well deserves the honour with which it is proposed to celebrate it."
