My hopes of heav'n were firm and bright;
But since the precept came,
With a convincing pow'r and light,
I find how vile I am.

My guilt appear'd but small before,
Till terribly I saw,

How perfect, holy, just, and pure,
Was thine eternal law.

[ocr errors]

Then felt my soul the heavy load,
My sins reviv'd again;

I had provok'd a dreadful God,
And all my hopes were vain.
5 I'm like a helpless captive, sold,
Under the pow'r of sin;
I cannot do the good I would,
Nor keep my conscience clean.
6 My God, I cry, with ev'ry breath,
For some kind pow'r to save,
To break the yoke of sin and death,
And thus redeem the slave.

59. The First and Second Adam. Rom. v. 2, &c.

1DE

(L. M.)

EEP in the dust before thy throne,
Our guilt and our disgrace we own;
Great God, we own th' unhappy name,
Whence sprung our nature and our shame.
2 Adam, the sinner: at his fall,

Death, like a conqu'ror, seiz'd us all:
A thousand new-born babes are dead,
By fatal union to their head.

3 But whilst our spirits, fill'd with awe,
Behold the terrors of thy law,

We sing the honours of thy grace,
That sent to save our ruin'd race.

4 We sing thine everlasting Son,
Who join'd our nature to his own;
Adam the second, from the dust,
Raises the ruins of the first.

5 By the rebellion of one man,

Through all his seed the mischief ran;
And by one man's obedience now,
Are all his seed made righteous too.

6 Where sin did reign and death abound,
There have the sons of Adam found
Abounding life; there, glorious grace,
Reigns through the Lord our righteousnes

360. Faith in Christ for Pardon and Sanctificat

1 HOW

(C. M.)

W sad our state by nature is!
Our sin how deep it stains!

And Satan binds our captive minds,
Fast in his slavish chains.

2 But there's a voice of sov'reign grace,
Sounds from the sacred word,
Ho, ye despairing sinners, come,
"And trust upon the Lord."

[ocr errors]

3 My soul obeys th' almighty call,
And runs to this relief;

I would believe thy promise, Lord;
Oh! help my unbelief.

4 To the dear fountain of thy blood,
Incarnate God, I fly;

Here let me wash my spotted soul,
From crimes of deepest dye.

5 Stretch out thine arm, victorious King,
My reigning sins subdue ;
Drive the old dragon from his seat,
Create my heart anew.

6 A guilty, weak, and helpless worm,
On thy kind arms I fall;

Be thou my strength and righteousness,
My Jesus, and my All.

Corrupt Nature from Adam. (C. M.)

BLESS

LESS'D with the joys of innocence,
Adam our father stood,

"Till he debas'd his soul to sense,
And eat forbidden food.

2 Now we are born a sensual race,
To sinful joys inclin'd;

Reason has lost its native place,
And flesh enslaves the mind.

3 While flesh, and sense, and passion reigns,
Sin is the sweetest good:
We fancy music in our chains,

And so forget the load.

4 Great God! renew our ruin'd frame ;
Our broken pow'rs restore :
Inspire us with a heav'nly flame,
And flesh shall reign no more.

5 Eternal Spirit! write thy law,
Upon our inward parts;
And let the second Adam draw,
His image on our hearts.

SIN

INNER, O why so thoughtless grown Why in such dreadful haste to die; Daring to leap to worlds unknown, Heedless against thy God to fly? 2 Wilt thou despise eternal fate, Urg'd on by sin's fantastic dreams, Madly attempt th' infernal gate, And force thy passage to the flames? 3 Stay, sinner, on the gospel plains, Behold the God of love unfold, The glories of his dying pains,. For ever telling, yet untold..

363. The Danger of Wilful Sin. Ezek. xxii.

STOP,

(P.M.)

TOP, poor sinner! stop and think,
Before you farther go;

Will you sport upon the brink,

Of everlasting woe?

All your sins will round you crowd,
Sins of a blood-crimson dye;
Each for vengeance crying loud,
And what can you reply?

2 Say, have you an arm like God,
That you his will oppose?

Fear you not that iron rod,

With which he breaks his foes?

Can you stand in that great day,
When He judgment shall proclaim,
And the earth shall melt away,
Like wax before the flame?

3 Though your heart be made of steel,
Your forehead lin'd with brass,
God at length will make you feel,
He will not let you pass:
Sinners then in vain will call,
Though they now despise his grace,
"Rocks and mountains on us fall,
"And hide us from his face."

4 But, as yet there is a hope,
You may his mercy know;
Though his arm is lifted up,.

He still forbears the blow:
"Twas for sinners Jesus died,
Sinners he invites to come;
None who come shall be denied,

He says,

"There still is room."

EHOLD the glories of the Lamb,
Amidst his Father's throne:

Prepare new honours for his name,
And songs before unknown.
