Mrs. Noverre, of Great Marlborough-str. At his feat a Theobids, aged 75, Anthony Keck, efq. fenior ferjeant at law. He was buried at Cheshunt, to which parish he had been a great benefactor by his conftant and extenfive charity. He has left furviving two fons: the eldest a clergyman, the other a merchant in Holland. His eldeft fon (who fat in feveral parliaments) and his only daugh ter, died before him.

4. At Nailfton, in Leicestershire, aged 82, Thomas Bentley, LL.D. fenior fellow of Trinity Coll. Camb. and rector of that parish. This living, which is in the gift of the crown, he has enjoyed near 40 years. He was proctor in bis Univerfity in the year 1748, when the Duke of Newcastle, the then premier, was inftalled chancellor, who prefented him to this living. He is faid to have died

worth the accumulated value of his livings (which is above 2001, a year) fince his accef fion to it. He was nephew to the great Dr. Bentley; and published "Cicero de Finibus" in 1718, and "Cæfar's Commentaries" in 1742. In aukward imitation of his uncle Richard, he is faid to have attacked the Lainity of Taylor's famous "Mufic Speech," in 1730; criticifing anonymously in newspaper the first fentence, as an unusual contruction, without two infinitive words alter fore; which the Doctor vindicated in converfation, by authorities both ancient and modern. In 1741, an edition of "Callima chus," for fchools, was published by Thomas Bentley; and not by his truly great uncle, to whom it was afcribed in the first edition of the 66 Biographia Britannica." See the "Anecdotes of Bowyer," p. 62. This par ticular, we obferve, is corrected in Dr. Kippis's improved edition; where we are told alfo, that the completion of the great critic's intended edition of the Greek Teftament was the principal employment of the latter part of his life. He had colletted and collated all the manufcripts of Europe to which aecefs could be obtained For this purpose, his nephew (whofe death we now record) travelled thro Europe at his uncle's expence. The work was of luch magnitude, that ire found it neceffary, for the first time, to publish proposals for printing it by fubfcription. The whole was completed for publication, and he had received 2000l. in part of the fubfcription, all which he returned to the fubfcribers, when be took the refolution of not letting it appear in the world during his own life. The work was in the poffeffion of his executor, Dr. T. Bentley; and it is hoped that it will now fee the light. One generous literary action we can point out in the rector of Nalton, Tive collation of the famous Vatican MS. he in 1784 permitted Mr. Woide to tranfcribe, fr the ufe of his unparalleled edition of the Alexandrian copy of the New Teftement; which, we are happy to inform our readers, 19 nearly ready for the public, and will prove one of the ciofeft imitations of the orsginal MS. that the art of typography has produced.

eputable academy at Ware. At this time a capital school for young ladies was kept at Bington (and fuch feminaries were not then to be met with at every tenth houfe) by a Mrs. Science, wife to Mr. Thomas 5. a remarkably fcientific watchmaker. On the death of Mrs. Science, the school was carried on by a daughter of her former hulband's (who had been her affiftant) of the name of Barker. With this lady Mr. Shield becoming enamoured, a matrimonial union enfued; and the fchool for young ladies (which had fome time before greatly declined in confequence of old Science marrying a rich young heiress entrusted to his guardianship, a Mifs Hughes of Worcester, who had a fortune of 30,000l.), was converted into an academy for bays, which was carried on by Mr. and Mrs. Shield for a long feries of years with the Breateft reputation and fuccefs, as fome living fcholars now fhining ornaments in the literary world, fome alfo who have diftinguished themfelves in civil and military offices, and many more of the first eminence in the line of commerce, can testify. The death of his wife fome years ago, which had been praceded by that of a lovely daughter fnatched away by the small-pox when on the point of marriage to Mr. Church (nephew to the famous author Mr. James Burgh, and now an eminent furgeon at Iflington) having led Mr. S. to wish for retirement, he quitted the fchool, at a time when it was in full reputation, to feel comfort in a fecond marriage with a RICH old neighbour. How far he fucceeded in his wish, is not for us to tell. It may be fufficient to fay, that from the moment of his marriage he became an altered man. No longer delighting in the company of his former friends; his vivacity, his tafte for rational amufements, and no ímall portion of his natural good fenfe, feemed to have abandoned him. Wealthy himself, and that wealth joined to the greater fortune of an opulent wife, he has often lamented to the writer of this article (who was eight years under his tuition, was greatly beloved by him, and entertained for him an almost filial regard) that he dared not afk any old acquaintance to visit him; was debarred the liberty of amufing himself occahonally at a coffee house; and was unable to purchase a fhilling pamphlet, having frequently not the command of a fixpence of his own property The death of his amiable wife is recorded our left vol. p. 1010; and his own has followed within the short space of three months. Within a few years he loft two out of three fons (oue of them killed by a fall from a carriage); and his property now devolves to the only furviving child.
