ATELY, at Hammersmith, Thomas Hon. John Byron, vice-adm. of the white. He was 2d fon of the late Lord Byron, and 2d brother to the present, and was born Nov. 8, 1732. He was the laft furvivor of the crew of the Wager man of war, Capt. Cheap, one of Adm. Anfon's fquadron, shipwrecked on an uninhabited island in the South Seas, and out of 160 who escaped, not above ten lived to return to England. He was at that time midshipman; and after being pri foner among the Indians and Spaniards on the coaft of Chili five years, Capt. Cheap, Lieut. Hamilton of the marines, and himself, arrived in England; almost all the rest of the crew having perished by famine in attempting to get back to the Brafils, in their boats, through the Straits of Magellan. See his narrative, published in 1768. In 1764, when he commanded as commodore in the Dolphin man of war the first expedition fent out for the purpose of difcovery in the prefent reign, he obferved the race of Patagonians in the Straits of Magellan, of whom fee his narrative, and our vol. XXXVIII. p. 321. He was afterwards promoted to the rank of admiral-He married, in 1748, Sophia dau. of John Trevanion, efq; of Cornwall, by whom he had iffue two fons; John, born 1756, and George, born 1758; and seven daughters, of whom three died infants; Frances married to Capt. The hiftory of this gentleman is fingular; he was formerly a calendar at Manchester, but joined the Pretender in the last rebellion, and was taken prifoner at Carlisle, He was confined in Newgate, and would certainly have suffered for his unfortunate attachment, had not he, together with his companion, efcaped from Newgate by making a breach in the wall: his companion got out first, but Mr. Holker being a very fquare bulky man, the hole was too fmall to admit his escape. When his companion, who had got down fafe, fonnd Mr. H. could not follow him, he had the gemerous refolution to afcend by the way which he had escaped, determined that, if H. could not get out, he would stay and fhare his fate. They went to work again, and, having enlarged the hole, they both escaped. Holker afterwards remained fix weeks concealed in London, by a woman who kept a green-ftall although fome hundred pounds were offered for his apprehenfion. He afterwards escaped to France, and ferved with honour in the Irish brigade, till peace deprived him of his pay. Various were the applications made by him to the Crown for pardon, but this he could never obtain; forced at last by neceffity, he was induced to attempt the introduction of the Manchester manufactory at Rouen, in which he but too fuccefsfully fucceeded, to the great detriment of this counBy he lived to fee the manufactory in ite full vigour, and to reap the reward of his ingenuity and induftry. In Hatton-Garden, John Stanley, efq; maker of his Majesty's band of muficians, and organist to the fociety of the Temple, and St. Andrew's, Holbern; and on the evening of the 27th his remains were interred in the new burying ground of St. Andrew's. At that parish church, on the 28th [Sunday], inftead of the usual voluntary, a folemo dirge, and after service, "I know that my Redeemer liveth," were, with great propriety, given upon that organ on which Mr. Stanley had, with much eminence, difplayed his musical abilities near 60 years. 20. John Young, D.D. fellow of Eton college, and prebendary of Worcester. After riding about two miles in the chace mentioned P. the Doctor's house fell, and, rolling over him, bruised him terribly. His Majefty.exprefled great concern at the Doctor's misfortune, and immediately fent off an exprefs to Windfor for every neceffary affiftance. The Doctor was upwards of 70 years of age, and bad been prefent at almost every hunt during the feafon. It is rather remarkable, that before the chace began, the Doctor was advifed, by fome gentlemen on the hunt, not to ride, as they obferved his horse's eyes were bad, and he was otherwife out of condition. We are forry to say, that the Doctor did not furvive the fall above two hours. 26. After a week's illness, at Stoneleigh Abbey, co. Warwick, the right hon. Edward Lord Leigh, Baron Leigh of Stoneleigh, and Baronet. His lordship was born March 1, 1742; took his feat in the House of Peers March 15, 1764; and was appointed High Steward of the University of Oxford in Apri 1767.
