rect, and he feldom failed of producing a moft ftriking likenefs. In hiftory there are fome pieces done by him particularly, "Dedalus and Icarus," "Diana and Endy"mion," now in Glafgow; effay-pieces done at Rome, that would do credit to any pencil; he never could be prevailed upon to put his name yet, from an unusual modefty and diffidence, to his works. A dutiful attachment to an aged mother and other relations fixed him in Glafgow, ambition with him was no ruling paffon, nor was he eager after riches; but a duity to please, were confpicuous traits of natural philanthropic difpofition, and an affihis character. By permition of the Lord Provost and magiftrates, he was buried in the choir of the cathedral church, where a neat marble is to be erected to his memory, with this intcription: In memory

Thomas Lennard, Earl of Suffex. Having received a liberal education in England, he was fent to the University of Laufanne in Switzerland, and afterwards made the tour of Europe, whereby he became compleated in in every polite accomplishment, as a gentleman and scholar. In Italy he not only made himself master of the language, but acquired great knowledge in the polite arts, particularly architecture, to his fkill in which his feat of Bellhouse owes that elegant neatnefs of its decorations from defigns made by himself, and executed under his own immediate intpection, in compleating which he contracted a disorder that deprived him of the use of his limbs for feveral years before his death, and prevented him from enjoying an extenfive fet of valuable acquaintance: but thofe few whom he diftinguished with his friendfhip were felected with the niceft judgement, for their virtues and learning. His lordship's intimate knowledge of the hißory, antiquities, and genealogies of these kingdoms, is evident from the great affistance, several of our beft writers on thefe fubjects have acknowledged they received from him. In politicks be was (to ufe his own words), a true and zealous friend of liberty, and the proteftant religion. He was a moit tender hufband, a grod landlord, an indulgent matter, and a liber-1 benefactor to the induftrious poor. His remains were interred in the family vault at Avely in Efex, and though the funeral was, agrecable to his particular defire, as private as could be, yet the church was not capable of containing half the number of persons who bad affembled on the melancholy occafion. His dp. married Anna Maria, daughter of Sir John Pratt, of Wilderness, co. These are but a few traits of the cha2d Lord Ducre, by his coufan Sir Edward racter of this extraordinary man, to which Barrett, Lord Newburgh, 1644, on condition many more might be added of clear intellec of his taking his name and arms. This Ritual faculties, unblemished credit, and enchard Barrett was great grandfather to the fubject of this article, who much improved this ancient manfion, which is fituated in a well-wooded park, about three miles round; and tho' Herft Monceaux was fold out of this family by the extravagance of one of his ancestors on pence of procuring capital drawings of that noble, but now ruined manfion, copies of which he communicated to Mr. Burrell and Mr. Grofe.
