Abraham Lincoln, the sixteenth President of the United States, was assassinated on the night of April 14, 1865, and died the following morning. The duties of the Presidential office devolving, in this event, upon the Vice-President, Andrew Johnson, he accordingly took the oath of office, April 15, 1865. James A. Garfield, the twentieth President of the United States, was shot by an assassin, July 2, 1881, and died from the effects of his wounds, September 19, 1881. The duties of the Presidential office devolving, in this event, upon the Vice-President, Chester A.
