THE first edition of this List or Brief Catalogue of the Books of Reference in the Reading Room, consisting of nearly 20,000 volumes, was published in 1859. Since that date frequent improvements have been effected by the introduction of new works, and of new editions, whenever these presented any advantage over those previously placed in the room.

The works in progress have, as far as possible, been carried up to the end of 1870. A new "Plan" has been prepared.

The few changes which have taken place in the arrangements of the Reading Room and in the staff, are indicated in foot-notes to the Preface of the present edition.
