During the time of these observations, which were made

to ascertain the altitudes and the thickness of strata, the wind was blowing a very violent gale, and the barometer was undergoing rapid fluctuations.

These observations made for the sole purpose of deter-
mining the height of Blue mound above Wiskonsin
river. The result was, that the altitude is within a few
inches of 1,000 feet.
