NEW ENGLAND.

July 11, 1838.-Ordered that a contract be made with Dennis Cooley to supply West Whately, Mass., once a week, from Whately, 3 miles, at not ex., ceeding $18 per annum, and not exceeding net proceeds of West Whately. Service commenced July, 1837; to expire June 30, 1841.

July 11, 1838.-Ordered that the postmaster at Upper Yarmouth, Me., engage a carrier to supply his office with the mail once a week, from North Yarmouth, 5 miles, at not exceeding $5 a mile, and not exceeding net pro. ceeds of Upper Yarmouth. Under this order the postmaster contracted with Charles Litcomb, at $16 per annum; limited to the net proceeds of Upper Yarmouth. Service commenced November 1, 1838; to expire June 30, 1841.

July 20, 1838.—Ordered that a contract be made with the Providence stage company, to convey the mail twice, daily, between Providence, R. I., and Pawtucket, 4 miles, at $100 per annum. Contract refused by stage company.

July 20, 1838.-Ordered that a contract be made with James Johnston, to supply Greely, Me., with the mail once a week, from Lebec, 13 miles, at not exceeding $4 a mile per annum, and not exceeding net proceeds of Greely. Contract executed: to commence September 28, 1838; to expire June 30, 1841.

August 1, 1838.-Ordered that a contract be made with Hiranı Barnes, to convey the mail six times a week, in steamboats, between New York and Norwalk, Conn., at $100 per annum. Service to commence August 8, 1838; to expire June 30, 1841.

• August 8, 1838.-Ordered that a contract te made with Daniel Keens, to supply Bremen, Me., with the mail once a week, from Bristol Mills, 5 miles, at not exceeding $5 per annum, and not exceeding net proceeds of Bremen. Contract executed: to commence October 1, 1838; to expire June 30, 1841.

August 8, 1838.-Ordered that the postmaster at Mercer, Me., engage a carrier to convey the mail twice a week, between his office and East Sharon, 2 miles, at not exceeding $25 per annum. Order modified September 29, 1838, so as to enable the postmaster at Mercer, to procure a supply from Norndjenock. Curtailment on No. 119 having been repealed, this service was rendered unnecessary. See order October 24, 1838, on 119.

August 8, 1838.-Ordered that the postmaster at West Waterville, Me., engage a carrier to convey the mail once a week, between his office and

Waterville, õ miles, at not exceeding $35 per annum. Under this order the postmaster contracted with Caleb Tinkham, at $30 per annum; limited to net proceeds of West Waterville. Service to commence October 1, 1838; to expire June 30, 1841.

August 8, 1838.-Ordered that the postmaster at Ira, Vt., engage a carrier to convey the mail once a week, between West Rutland and Middletown, 16 miles, at not exceeding $70 per annum. Under this order a contract was made with Esick Eddy, at $70 per annum. To commence October 23, 1838; to expire June 30, 1841.

August 8, 1838.-Ordered that the postmaster at Hampton, Vt., engage a carrier to convey the mail twice a week, between his office and West Poultnay, 1 mile, at not exceeding $15 per annum. Under this order the postmaster contracted with James B. Houghtailing, on the terms stated. Service to commence October 1, 1838; to expire June 30, 1841.

August 15, 1838.--Ordered that the postmaster at North Rochester, engage a carrier to supply his office once a week, from West Middleborough, 5 miles, at not exceeding $30 per annum, and not exceeding net proceeds of North Rochester. Under this order the postmaster contracted with Job T. Toby, on the terms stated. Service to commence October 3, 1838; to expire June 30, 1841.

August 16, 1838.-Ordered that the postmaster at Houlton, Me., engage a carrier to convey the mail once a week, from his office to Woodstock, N. B., 14 miles, at $3 a mile per annum; and if any New Brunswick mail arrives at Woodstock oftener than once a week, then to contract at the same rate for as many corresponding weekly trips, not, however, to exceed four. Under this order a contract was made with James R. Tupper, for service four times a week, at $168 per annum. Service to commence October 1, 1838; to expire September 30, 1839.

August 22, 1838.-Ordered that the postmaster at Zoar's Bridge, Conn., engage a carrier to supply his office with the mail once a week, from the nearest office, at not exceeding $30 per annum, and not exceeding the net proceeds of Zoar's Bridge. Under this order the postmaster contracted with Robt. Lee, on the terms stated, to supply his office from Derby, 8 miles. Service to commence September 29, 1838; to expire June 30, 1841.

August 31, 1838.-Ordered that a temporary contract be made with Henry Penninian to convey the mail in 4-horse post-coaches from Wor. cester, Mass., by Millbury, Sutton, West Sutton, and East Douglass, to Douglass, 22 miles, twice daily to Millbury, and daily the residue, at $1,000 per annum. Service to commence September 10, 1838; to expire June 30, 1839.

August 31, 1838.-Ordered that the postmaster at New York and Bridgeport, Conn., pay 3 cents for each letter and 1 cent for each newspaper, (chargeable with postage) delivered into their offices by the masters of steamboats plying between those places : full postage to be charged on said letters according to the distance they are to be conveyed.

September 29, 1838.-Ordered that a contract be made with Hall & Cole. man to supply Lynnfield, Mass., with the mail, 3 times a week, from Salem, 7 miles, at not exceeding $105 per annum, and not exceeding net proceeds of Lynnfield. Service commenced May 10, 1837 ; to expire June 30, 1841.

September 29, 1835.-Ordered that the postmaster at Peru, Me., engage a carrier to supply his office with the mail, once a week, from Dixfield, 4 miles, at not exceeding $24 per annum, and not exceeding net proceeds of Peru. Under this order, postmaster contracted with Winslow Walker on the terms stated. Service commenced October 20, 1839; to expire June 30, 1841.

September 29, 1838.- Ordered that the postmaster at Elliot, Me., engage a carrier to convey the mail twice a week between his office and Portsmouth, 6 miles, at not exceeding $70 per annum. Under above order, a contract was made with Nathaniel Hammondan, on terms stated, from October 15, 1838; to expire December 31, 1839.

September 29, 1838.-Ordered that the postmaster at West Millbury, Mass., engage a carrier to supply his office with the mail three times a week from Millbury, 6 miles, at not exceeding $50 per annum, and not exceeding net proceeds of West Millbury. Under this order, a contract was made with Elmer Lothrop on the terms stated. Service to commence October 22, 1838; to expire June 30, 1841.

September 29, 1838.—Ordered that a contract be made with E. Beach to carry the great mail between New York and New Haven, Conn., during suspension of steamboat navigation, at $500 for the first three days, and $100 a day for each day's service, beyond three; with the understanding that he is to be paid $300, in case the navigation should not be interrupted, for being prepared with the necessary stock to perform the service. On the 8th of April, 1839, E. Beach was allowed $300 for being prepared to carry the great mail by land, navigation not having been interrupted.

October 10, 1838.-Ordered that the postmaster at Norwich, Conn., engage a carrier to carry the mail. once a week from Norwich, by Gardner's lake, to North Lynn, 14} miles and back, at not exceeding $115 per annum. Under this order a contract was made with Charles K. Butler on the terms stated. Service to commence October 31, 1838 ; to expire December 31, 1839.

October 17, 1838.-Ordered that a contract be made with Lovel Baker to convey the mail 6 times a week from New England Village depot, by New England Village and Grafton, to Farnansville, — miles and back, at $150 per annum. Service to commence October 22, 1838; to expire December 31, 1839.

October 17, 1838.-Ordered that a contract be made with Nathaniel Hammond to convey the mail twice a week between l'ortsmouth, N, H., and Elliot, Me., at $70 per annum. Service to commence October 16, 1838; to expire December 31, 1839.
