September 29, 1838.-Ordered that a contract be made with Hall & Coleman to supply Lynnfield, Mass., with the mail, 3 times a week, from Salem, 7 miles, at not exceeding $105 per annum, and not exceeding net proceeds of Lynnfield. Service commenced May 10, 1837; to expire June 30, 1841.

September 29, 1838.-Ordered that the postmaster at Peru, Me., engage a carrier to supply his office with the mail, once a week, from Dixfield, 4 miles, at not exceeding $24 per annum, and not exceeding net proceeds of Peru. Under this order, postmaster contracted with Winslow Walker on the terms stated. Service commenced October 20, 1838; to expire June 30, 1841.

September 29, 1838.-Ordered that the postmaster at Elliot, Me., engage a carrier to convey the mail twice a week between his office and Portsmouth, 6 miles, at not exceeding $70 per annum. Under above order, a contract was made with Nathaniel Hammondan, on terms stated, from October 15, 1838; to expire December 31, 1839.

September 29, 1838.-Ordered that the postmaster at West Millbury, Mass., engage a carrier to supply his office with the mail three times a week from Millbury, 6 miles, at not exceeding $50 per annum, and not exceeding net proceeds of West Millbury. Under this order, a contract was made with Elmer Lothrop on the terms stated. Service to commence October 22, 1838; to expire June 30, 1841.

September 29, 1838.-Ordered that a contract be made with E. Beach to carry the great mail between New York and New Haven, Conn., during suspension of steamboat navigation, at $500 for the first three days, and $100 a day for each day's service, beyond three; with the understanding that he is to be paid $300, in case the navigation should not be interrupted, for being prepared with the necessary stock to perform the service. On the 8th of April, 1839, E. Beach was allowed $300 for being prepared to carry the great mail by land, navigation not having been interrupted.

October 10, 1838.-Ordered that the postmaster at Norwich, Conn., engage a carrier to carry the mail. once a week from Norwich, by Gardner's lake, to North Lynn, 14 miles and back, at not exceeding $115 per annum. Under this order a contract was made with Charles K. Butler on the terms stated. Service to commence October 31, 1838; to expire December 31, 1839.

October 17, 1838.-Ordered that a contract be made with Lovel Baker to convey the mail 6 times a week from New England Village depot, by New England Village and Grafton, to Farnansville, - miles and back, at $150 per annum. Service to commence October 22, 1838; to expire December 31, 1839.

October 17, 1838.-Ordered that a contract be made with Nathaniel Hammond to convey the mail twice a week between Portsmouth, N. H., and Elliot, Me., at $70 per annum. Service to commence October 16, 1838; to expire December 31, 1839.

October 31, 1838.-Ordered that an arrangement be made with Hardy Mills to convey the mail every Sunday between Middletown, Conn., and Meriden, 9 miles, at $72 per annum. Service to continue till railroad is made, but not to extend beyond June 30, 1841. By an order of March 18, 1839, William Bacon was substituted for Hardy Mills, the latter having declined the service.

October 31, 1838.-Ordered that the arrangement made by the postmaster at New York with John A. Ames, to carry the mail daily to and from the eastern steamboats, at $1 per day, from July 1, 1838, be sanctioned.

November 1, 1838.-Ordered that a contract be made with N. J. Thomas to carry the mail once a week on the route established by the act of 1838, from Eden, Me., to Bar Harbor, 8 miles, for the net proceeds of Bar Harbor, and such other offices as may be established thereon, agreeably to the provisions of said act. Service to commence November 24, 1838; to expire June 30, 1839.

November 15, 1838.-Ordered that a contract be made with John Atkinson to supply Pittsfield, Me., with the mail once a week from Palmyra, 51 miles, at not exceeding $30 per annum, and not exceeding the net proceeds of Pittsfield. Service to commence December 15, 1838; to expire June 30, 1841.

December 8, 1838.-Ordered that the postmaster at Windsor, Me., engage a carrier to convey the mail once a week between Windsor and Patricktown, 5 miles, at not exceeding $25 per annum. Under this order, a contract was made with John Cookson on the terms stated: from December 19, 1838; to June 30, 1841.

December 11, 1838.-Ordered that the postmaster at Middlebury, Vt., engage a carrier to convey the mail twice a week between Middlebury and Weybridge, Lower Falls, 5 miles, at not exceeding $33 per annum, from January 1, 1839, to March 1, following. Postmaster at Middlebury engaged Israel Marsh to perform service as above.

December 28, 1838.-Ordered that the postmaster at Newton, Ct., engage A. Fairchild to continue the service 4 times a week between Newtown and Bethel, 7 miles, at present rate of pay, $125 per annum, from January 1, 1839, until April 1, 1839: his contract for service, 6 times a week. Service between those places expiring December 31, 1838.

January 7, 1839.-Ordered that Kingman Thayer, the contractor on the route from Cummington to Plainfield, Mass., 5 miles, continue the semiweekly service between those places, from January 1, to March 31, 1839, at the present rate of pay, $60 per annum. His contract for that service having expired on December 31, 1838.

January 21, 1839.-Ordered that the postmaster at Essex, Ct., engage a carrier to convey the mail three times a week between Essex and Westbrook, 6 miles, at not exceeding $135 per annum. Under this order a contract

was made on terms stated, with Selden S. Dennison, from February 19, 1839, to February 19, 1840.

January 23, 1839.--Ordered that a contract be made with Samuel Oor, to convey the mail 3 times a week in 4-horse coaches on the new route, established by the act of 1838, from East Bridgewater, Mass., by John A. Conant's and J. W. Jenkins's Stores, and East Abington to South Weymouth, miles, for the net proceeds of the offices to be established thereon, agreeably to the provision of the said act. Service commenced July 1, 1837; to expire June 30, 1839.

January 23, 1839.--Ordered that a contract be made with Joshua Sawyer, to carry the mail 3 times a week in sulkeys on the new route established in 1838, from Northboro', Mass., to Lowell, miles, for the net proceeds of the new offices to be established thereon, agreeably to the provisions of said act. Service to commence February 15, 1839; to expire June 30, 1839.

January 26, 1839.--Ordered that Charles D. Stockbridge, the contractor on route No. 377a, East Whately to Whately, 2 miles, continue the transportation of the mail twice a week between those places, from January 1, to April 1, 1839, at the same rate of pay, $20 per annum. His contract for that service having expired on December 31, 1838.

January 26, 1839.-Ordered that a contract be made with George W. Whistler, agent of the New York, Providence, and Boston Railroad Com pany, to convey the mail on the railroad between Stonington, Ct., and Providence, R. I., 47 miles, twice daily, except Sunday, and once on that day, at $3,150 per annum; the mails to be carried to, and from, the offices at Stonington and Providence, without additional expense to the department. Service to commence January 26, 1839; to expire June 30, 1841.

February 2, 1839.--Ordered that a contract be made with Benjamin T. Reed, treasurer of the Eastern Railroad Company, to convey the great mail on the railroad between Boston and Salem, Mass., 15 miles, daily, and three additional daily mails, except Sunday, and to supply Lynn and Chelsea with one daily mail; with the privilege of carrying the great mail in postcoaches, until the cars shall run, on Sunday, at $2,721 per annum. Service to commence April 1, 1839; to expire June 30, 1841.

NOTE. By order of April 3, 1839, the contractor was permitted to omit the supply of Chelsea, and $100 per annum, deducted from his pay.

February 9, 1839.--Ordered that the postmaster at Calais, Me., engage a contractor to convey the mail daily, in stages, between Dennysville and Calais, 22 miles, at not exceeding $1,400 per annum. Under this order a contract was made with Columbus Cooper, at $1,375 per annum; the mail to be carried in a 2-horse carriage. Service to commence April 1, 1839; to expire June 30, 1841.

February 14, 1839.--Ordered that a contract be made with Selden S. Denison, to convey the mail 3 times a week between Essex and Westbrook,

Ct., 6 miles, at $135 per annum. Service to commence February 19, 1839; to expire February 19, 1840.

February 19, 1839.-Ordered that the postmaster at Charlestown, Mass., engage a contractor to convey the mail twice daily, between Charlestown and Boston, miles, at not exceeding $150 per annum. Under this order, John P. Dunklee was employed at $100 per annum. Service to commence February 26, 1839; to expire June 30, 1841.

March 18, 1839.-Ordered that a contract be made with Hale & Coleman, to convey the mail 3 times a week, in stages, between Portsmouth, N. H., and Exeter, 15 miles, at $300 per annum; from September 17, 1838; to expire June 30, 1841.

March 18, 1839.-Ordered that a contract be made with George W. Senter, to convey the mail 3 times a week, in stages, between Exeter, N. H., and Nashua, 37 miles, at $600 per annum; from October 3, 1838, to June 30, 1841.

March 22, 1839.-Ordered that Howard Kennedy, special agent of the department, contract with F. O. Handy, president of the New York and Boston Steam Transportation Company, to convey the mail 6 times a week in steamboats, between New York and Stonington, Ct., at not exceeding $3,150 per annum. No contract effected.

April 3, 1839.-Ordered that a contract be made with Hale & Waterhouse, to convey mail 3 times a week, in 4 horse coaches, between Augusta, Me., and North Yarmouth, 40 miles, at $750 per annum; from April 1, 1839, to June 30, 1841.

April 3, 1839.-Ordered that a contract be made with Alexander Brown, to convey the mail 6 times a week, between Boston and Chelsea, Mass., 3 miles, at $100 per annum; from April 1, 1839, to June 30, 1841.

April 8, 1839.-Ordered that the postmaster at Hartford, Ct., make an arrangement for the transportation of all mail matter between Hartford and New York, by steamboats, at a specific sum, not, in his opinion, to exceed 3 cents a letter; and, if that cannot be done, to make an arrangement at 3 cents for each letter sent.

April 17, 1839.-Ordered that a contract be made with George Brown, to convey the mail twice daily (except Sunday), between Westerly, Ct., and Railroad Depot, mile, at $46 per annum; from May 1, 1839, to June 80, 1841.

April 30, 1839.-Ordered that a contract be made with Lathrop Chamberlain, to convey the mail, 6 times a week, from Derby Line, Vt., to Stanstead, Lower Canada, miles, at $128 per annum. To take effect from April 1, 1839; to expire June 30, 1841.

May 28, 1839.-The steamboat service between New York and New Haven, Ct., having been abandoned by the New Haven Steamboat Company, who were the contractors at $6,000 per annum:

Ordered that the arrangement made by the postmaster at New York with Cornelius Vanderbilt, for the continuance of service for two weeks, commencing on the 26th May, 1839, at pro rata of former pay, with an allowance of $100 additional for each Sunday, be confirmed.

By order of the 6th June, the above arrangement was continued until the route could be otherwise disposed of. Under the latter order, C. Vanderbilt continued the service to the 6th July, 1839; he also performed service from the 9th to the 13th of July, 1839.

June 13, 1839.-Ordered that a contract be made with Columbus Cooper, to convey the mail, once a week, from Calais, Me., by Gilman's mills, Cooper, and Alexander, to Baileyville, miles, and back, at $180 per annum; from July 1, 1839, to June 30, 1841.

NEW YORK.

July 11, 1838.-The contractor on No. 749 (Rome to Baldwinsville) having failed, the postmaster at Rome was instructed to employ a carrier temporarily, at not exceeding $447 per annum.

The postmaster employed Nathan T. Greene at that sum, who performed service twice a week from May 15, 1838, to September 30, ensuing.

July 30, 1838.-The contract for route No. 708a (Fort Plain to Starksville) having expired on the 30th June, 1838, the postmaster at Starksville was authorized to engage a carrier until the 30th June, 1841, at not exceeding $40 per annum.

The postmaster employed Levi Wicks to carry the mail once a week, at $32 per annum. Service to commence August 15, 1838, and to expire June 30, 1841. From 1st July, 1838, to 1st August following, J. Hollenback performed the service at the rate of $35 per annum.

August 6, 1838.-Ordered that the arrangement made by the postmaster at Rhinebeck, with Stephen Jennings, to carry the mail daily from Rhinebeck to Rhinebeck landing, and across to Kingston landing, at 60 cents a trip, be sanctioned.

October 8, 1838.-Ordered that a contract be made with George Rogers to supply Point Peninsula and Pillar Point, once a week from Sackett's Harbor, 6 miles at not exceeding $35 per annum, and not exceeding net proceeds of Peninsula and Pillar Point. Service to commence December 12, 1838; to expire June 30, 1841.

October 22, 1838.-Ordered that the postmaster at Newburgh engage a carrier to convey the mail twice daily between his office and the steamboat landing, at $75 a quarter.

November 5, 1838.-Ordered that a contract be made with Jonathan Newton to supply Pine Ridge, once a week, from Sandy Creek, 3 miles, at not exceeding $12 per annum, and not exceeding net proceeds of Pine Ridge. Service to commence November 22, 1838; to expire June 30, 1841.
