July 20, 1838.-Ordered that a contract be made with Chauncey Hawley, to supply Brooklyn, Mich., with the mail once a week from Napoleon, 4 miles, at not exceeding $25 per annum, and not exceeding the net proceeds of Brooklyn. To take effect from July 1, 1838; to expire December 31, 1839.

July 20, 1838.-Ordered that a contract be made with Benjamin Gwinn to supply Thorp's Store, Mo., with the mail once a week from Plattsburgh, 9 miles, at not exceeding $75 per annum, and not exceeding the net proceeds of Thorp's Store. Service to commence August 27, 1838; to expire December 31, 1842.

July 20, 1838.-Ordered that a contract be made with W. R. Wellman to supply Fredonia, Mich., with the mail once a week from Lima, 5 miles, at not exceeding the net proceeds of Fredonia. Service to commence September 1, 1838; to expire December 31, 1842.

August 9, 1838.-Ordered that a contract be made with L. Andrews to supply Byron, Ill., with the mail once a week from Oregon City, 12 miles, at not exceeding $120 per annum, and not exceeding the net proceeds of Byron, he having declined executing the contract ordered with him on the 7th of June, 1838. Service to commence July 10, 1838; to expire June 30, 1842.

August 9, 1838.-Ordered that the postmaster at Griggsville, Ill., engage a carrier to convey the mail once a week from Griggsville, by Perry and Chambersburg, to Versailles, 15 miles and back, at not exceeding $120 per Under this order, Benjamin Butts was employed at $120 per annum. Service to commence December 20, 1838; to expire December 31, 1839.

August 9, 1838.-Ordered that the postmaster at Buffalo Grove, Ill., engage a carrier to convey the mail once a week on that part of route No. 2797 which lies between Buffalo Grove and Elkhorn, 6 miles, at not exceeding $50 per annum. Under above order, a contract was made with Levi Welden, on terms stated, from October 1, 1838, to June 30, 1842.

August 9, 1838.-Ordered that the postmaster at Lyon's Mills, Ia., engage a carrier to supply his office with the mail once a week from Martinsville, 4 miles, at not exceeding $25 per annum, and not exceeding net proceeds of Lyon's Mills. No contract.

August 16, 1838.-Ordered that the postmaster at Circleville, Ill., engage a carrier to supply his office with the mail once a week from Dillon, 4 miles, at not exceeding $36 per annum, and not exceeding net proceeds of Circleville. Contract not executed.

August 17, 1838.-Ordered that the postmaster at Detroit, Mich., engage a carrier to convey the mail daily between his office and the railroad depot, and to make payment for the service at the rate of $50 a day.

Note. The service on that part of route No. 1702 (Detroit to Niles), which lies between Detroit and Ypsilanti, 30 miles, was transferred to the railroad from March 1, 1838, at $25 a mile per annum, being $5 a mile per annum less than the cost of the coach service.

August 23, 1838.--Ordered that the postmaster at Waddam's Grove, Ill., engage a carrier to supply his office with the mail once a week, from the nearest office, at not exceeding $10 a mile per annum, and not exceeding the net proceeds of Waddam's Grove. Contract not executed.

August 30, 1838.-Ordered that a contract be made with Solomon Harvey, to supply Big Foot, Wis. Ter., with the mail once a week from Franklin, 8 miles, at not exceeding $80 per annum, and not exceeding net proceeds of Big Foot. Service to commence September 28, 1838; to expire June 30, 1842.

September 14, 1838.-No. 1701: Detroit, Michigan, to Lower Sandusky, Ohio, 101 miles daily, in 4-horse coaches; J. W. Brown & Co., contractors, at $6,991 per annum. No. 1712: Niles, Mich., to Chicago, Ill., 96 miles daily, in 4-horse coaches; Pratt, Gillis, & Co., contractors at $3,506 per annum. The contractors on these routes having failed.

Ordered that contracts be made with Saltmarsh & Spafford for No. 1701, at $10,000 per annum; and for No. 1712 at $7,750 per annum. Contract for 1701, executed on terms stated, by Otho Henton (to whom it was transferred), from October 11, 1838, to June 30, 1840. Contract for 1712, executed on terms stated, by Saltmarsh & Overton (to whom it was transferred), from November 1, 1838, to June 30, 1840.

October 4, 1838.-Ordered that a contract be made with G. & J. H. Jordan, to supply Waterloo and Sweet Home, Mo., with the mail once a week from St. Francisville, 40 miles, at not exceeding $300 per annum, and not exceeding the net preceeds of Waterloo and Sweet Home. Service commenced January 1, 1838; to expire June 30, 1842.

October 4, 1838.-Ordered that a contract be made with O. Beardsley to convey the mail on route No. 2905 from Milwaukie, Wis. Ter., to Troy, 30 miles and back, once a week, at $250 per annum. Service to commence November 9, 1838; to expire June 30, 1842.

October 4, 1838.-Ordered that the postmaster at Sarcoxie, Mo., engage a carrier to supply his office once a week from Mount Pleasant, - miles, at not exceeding $52 per annum, and not exceeding the net proceeds of Sarcoxie. Under this order, Merrick Hunt was employed at $52 per annum. Contract to take effect from November 14, 1838; to expire December 31, 1839.

August 4, 1838. Ordered that a contract be made with Peter S. Peckenpaugh to supply Meridian, Ill., with the mail once a week from Andover, 9 miles, at not exceeding $72 per annum, and not exceeding the net

proceeds of Meridian. Service to commence February 6, 1839; to expire June 30, 1842.

October 4, 1838.-Ordered that a contract be made with Clement Pierce to supply Greenbush, Ill., with the mail once a week from St. Augustine, 6 miles, at not exceeding $48 per annum, and not exceeding the net proceeds of Greenbush. Service to commence November 23, 1838; to expire June 30, 1842.

October 4, 1838.-Ordered that a contract be made with Abram Hensaucker to supply West Point, Iowa, with the mail once a week from Fort Madison, 10 miles, at not exceeding $80 per annum, and not exceeding the net proceeds of West Point. Service to commence February 3, 1839; to expire June 30, 1842.

October 18, 1838.-Ordered that a contract be made with Lewis B. Bordeaux to supply Muskegon, Mich., with the mail once a week from Grand Haven, 14 miles, at not exceeding $104 per annum, and not exceeding the net proceeds of Muskegon. Service to commence February 8, 1839; to expire December 31, 1839.

October 18, 1838.-Ordered that a contract be made with the Erie and Kalamazoo Railroad Company for the daily transportation of the mail on their road between Toledo, O., and Adrian, Mich., 32 miles, at $32 60 a mile, or $1,043 per annum. To take effect from March 1, 1838; to expire June 30, 1840.

October 18, 1838.-Ordered that a contract be made with Benjamin P. Major to supply Tully, Mo., with the mail once a week from Monticello, 10 miles, at not exceeding $72 per annum, and not exceeding the net proceeds of Tully. This order was rescinded February 22, 1839, and the route discontinued.

October 18, 1838.-Ordered that a contract be made with John Birch to supply Onondaga, Ia., with the mail twice a week from Plymouth, 7 miles, at not exceeding $75 per annum, and not exceeding net proceeds of Onondaga. Service to commence February 9, 1839; to expire June 30, 1842.

November 9, 1838.-Ordered that a contract be made with William J. Madden to supply Sinissee, Wis. Ter., with the mail once a week from Jamestown, 7 miles, at not exceeding $50 per annum, and not exceeding net proceeds of Sinissee. Contract not executed.

November 9, 1838.-Ordered that a contract be made with John Forman to supply Memphis, Mo., with the mail once a week from Sand Hill, 13 miles, at not exceeding $100 per annum, and not exceeding the net proceeds of Memphis. Service to commence March 14, 1839; to expire June 30, 1842.

November 9, 1838.-Ordered that a contract be made with Elijah Stanton to supply Stockbridge, Mich., with the mail once a week from Unadilla, 8 miles, at not exceeding $50 per annum, and not exceeding net

proceeds of Stockbridge. Stanton having failed, a contract was ordered January 24, 1839, with L. Petrie, on same terms. Service to commence November 11, 1838; to expire December 31, 1839.

November 9, 1838.-Ordered that a contract be made with Warren Buckland to supply Onondaga, Mich., with the mail once a week from Aurelius, 6 miles, at not exceeding $40 per annum, and not exceeding net proceeds of Onondaga. Service to commence January 1, 1839; to expire December 31, 1839.

November 9, 1838.-Ordered that a contract be made with Walter Reynolds to supply Houston, Ill., with the mail once a week from Clayton, 11 miles, at not exceeding $75 per annum, and not exceeding the net proceeds of Houston. March 8, 1839.-Ordered that acceptance to Reynolds be countermanded, and contract made with Levi T. Benton, on same terms, from January 5, 1839, to June 30, 1842.

November 23, 1838.-Ordered that a contract be made with William B. Waddle to supply Mason, Mo., with the mails once a week from Stattsburg, 10 miles, at not exceeding $70 per annum, and not exceeding net proceeds of Mason. Service to commence February 21, 1839; to expire June 30, 1842.

December 17, 1838.-Ordered that a contract be made with Calvin Ward to supply Waterville, Ill., with the mail twice a week from Elgin, 10 miles, at not exceeding $120 per annum, and not exceeding the net proceeds of Waterville. April 11, 1839.-Ordered that the limit be increased to $160 per annum, and not to exceed net proceeds of St. Charles (formerly Waterford). Service to commence December 17, 1838; to expire June 30, 1842.

December 17, 1838.-Ordered that the postmaster at Aurelius, Michigan, engage a carrier to convey the mail once a week between his office and Mason Centre, 8 miles, at not exceeding $64 per annum. Contract not executed.

December 31, 1838.-Ordered that a contract be made with A. J. Lucas to supply Weston, Mo., with the mail one a week from Aurora, 6 miles, at not exceeding $40 per annum, and not exceeding net proceeds of Weston. Service to commence January 9, 1839; to expire June 30, 1842.

December 31, 1838.-Ordered that a contract be made with George F. Riefenthal to supply Herman, Mo., with the mail once a week from Griswold City, 15 miles, at not exceeding $90 per annum, and not exceeding net proceeds of Herman. Riefenthal having declined executing, contract was made with George Rogers, at $85 per annum, from April 1, 1839, to June 30, 1842.

January 10, 1839.-Ordered that a contract be made with Egbert W. Pattison to supply Aleidon, Mich., with the mail once a week from Mason Centre, 4 miles, at not exceeding $25 per annum, and not exceeding the net proceeds of Aleidon. Contract not executed.

January 10, 1839.-Ordered that a contract be made with A. W. Gates to supply Springport, Mich., with the mail once a week from Albion, 11 miles, at not exceeding $60 per annum, and not exceeding net proceeds of Springfield. Service commenced January 1, 1839; to expire December 31, 1839.

January 12, 1839.-Ordered that a contract be made with Henderson Lewelling to supply Salem, Iowa, with the mail once a week from West Point, 15 miles, at not exceeding $90 per annum, and not exceeding the net proceeds of Salem. Service to commence March 18, 1839; to expire June 30, 1842.

January 12, 1839.-Ordered that a contract be made with F. Harvey to carry the mail once a week between Half Day, Ill., and McHenry C. H., 20 miles, at $143 per annum. Service commenced December 19, 1838; to expire December 31, 1839.

January 12, 1839.-Ordered that a contract be made with Hartley Letchel to supply Troy Grove, Ill., with the mail once a week from Ottowa, 15 miles, at not exceeding $160 per annum, and not exceeding net proceeds of Troy Grove. Service to commence January 12, 1839; to expire June 30, 1842.

January 12, 1839.-Ordered that a contract be made with Elijah Hamilton to supply Kennonsville, Mo., with the mail once a week from Taylor's Mills, 9 miles, at not exceeding $30 per annum, and not exceeding the net proceeds of Kennonsville. Service to commence April 27, 1839; to expire June 30, 1842.

January 24, 1839.-Ordered that a contract be made with Charles Hicks to supply Hicks's Mills, Ill., with the mail once a week from Belvidera, 13 miles, at not exceeding $90 per annum, and not exceeding the net proceeds of Hicks's Mills. Service to commence April 27, 1839; to expire June 30, 1842.

January 24, 1839.-Ordered that the postmaster at Panther's Creek, Ill., employ a carrier to supply his office with the mail once a week from Virginia, 9 miles, at not exceeding $54 per annum, and not exceeding net proceeds of Panther's Creek. Contract not executed.

February 22, 1839.-Ordered that a contract be made with J. S. Stevens to supply Boonesboro', Mo., with the mail once a week from Millersburg, 6 miles, at not exceeding $45 per annum, and not exceeding net proceeds of Boonesboro'. Service to commence June 12, 1839; to expire June 30, 1842.
