No. 3.-Abstract of bids under advertisement of June 4, 1838, inviting proposals for carrying the mails of the United States from the 1st of January, 1839 (except as hereinafter stated), to the 30th of June, 1843, on the following routes in Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida; to be received at the department until the 10th day of September, 1838, inclusive, to be decided by the 24th day of said month. On routes where the then existing contracts had been extended to the 30th of June, 1839, the new service (unless of a higher degree than that in operation) was to commence on the 1st of July, 1839; these cases are specially noted under their respective numbers.

No. 1801.-From Washington, D. C., by Jourdon, Woolfolk, & Co. $35,000; or
Alexandria and Fort Washington, Md., to
Fredericksburg, Va., 56 miles and back, daily,
-in steamboats and 4-horse post-coaches, with
privilege of running in coaches or mail-wag-
ons when navigation is suspended by ice.

Leave Washington every day at 10 p. m.;
arrive at Fredericksburg next day by 5 a. m.
Leave Fredericksburg every day at 5 p. m.;
arrive at Washington next day by 1 a. m.

No. 1802.-From Washington, by Georgetown, Prospect Hill, Dranesville, Leesburg, Hamilton, Purcell's Store, Wood Grove, Snickersville, Snicker's Ferry, and Berryville, to Winchester, 73 miles and back, 3 times a week, in stages.

$10,000, if schedule is changed as proposed, or same time allowed, with the understanding that the mail on No. 1807 is to be carried by railroad and that but one boat be required for the season. Orlando Saltmarsh & W. $30,000, to run in 7 hours, provided, when compelled P. Farish. to transport the mail in coaches or mail carts on account of obstructions of river by ice, shall be allowed 12 hours; and upon condition that the mail shall be carried on the railroad between Fredericksburg and Richmond.

ton, Buckland, New Baltimore, Warrenton,
Warrenton Springs, Jeffersonton, Rixeyville,
Culpeper C. H., Colvin's Tavern, Locust
Dale, Orange C. H., and Ellisville, to Louisa
C. H., 109 miles and back, 3 times a week, in
4-horse post-coaches; six times a week from
15th April to 15th October, in each year.

N. B. It is expected that the mail will be
conveyed in cars provided for the purpose,
under the direction of the department; and
that agents, appointed and paid by the depart-
ment to take charge of them, will be conveyed
free of charge whenever required.

Leave Fredericksburg daily at 6 a. m.; ar-
rive at Richmond same day by 11 a. m.

Leave Richmond daily at 12 m.; arrive at
Fredericksburg same day by 5 p. m.

the mail be not detained at Washington more than
14 hours, and at Fredericksburg or Richmond more
than one-half hour; the mails for intermediate places
to be received and delivered by a simple exchange of
bags; also, that the running time between Washing-
ton and Fredericksburg be limited to 6 hours, from
the 1st of April to the 1st of December. The com-
pany will carry the mail for the west from Rich-
mond to Junction; leaving Richmond at the same
hour the train for the south leaves Fredericksburg;
and the mail from the west to Richmond in a train
to leave Junction on the arrival of the cars of the
Louisa company; and also, a mail from Junction to
Fredericksburg, at such hours as may suit the com-
pany, 6 times a week from the 1st of May to the 1st
of December, and 3 times a week the residue of the
year, without additional pay; or, if the company be
permitted, from time to time, to fix the hour of de-
parture from Fredericksburg not earlier than 2 a. m.,
and not later than 6 a. m., and from Richmond not
earlier than 12 m., and not later than 5 p. m., for
$250 a mile; the company giving the department
reasonable notice of the hour of departure fixed on:
