47, Ludgate Hill: Nov. 1, 1852. THE English proprietors of the author's edition of "Wide, Wide World" have just issued, in one volume, a new and much cheaper edition of this very popular work.

Messrs. Darton and Co. have in the press, the "Autobiography of Mrs. Sherwood," embracing her personal diary from childhood, and letters addressed by her to many literary and other persons of note in her day. The life of so popular a writer, who has done so much to raise the juvenile literature of our time to a moral elevation it never attained before, must prove eminently interesting and instructive both to young and old.

The Athenæum says-" The movement in Marylebone, as it would appear, has roused the City of London to activity in the cause of education and literature; for we observe that a motion in favour of establishing a free library within the liberties thereof is about to be made in the Common Council. The Manchester example is spreading, as we predicted it would,—and even more rapidly."

"The Grand Duke of Tuscany has named a new commission, which, together with two members of a commission formerly appointed for the same purpose, is charged with the task of compiling a new national dictionary, in which all the new words that have established themselves in the language by daily use are to be incorporated and made classical."

Engene Sue has been spending the summer on the shores of Lake Annecy in Savoy, and during his sojourn there has finished a new romance, called "La Marquise Cornelia d'Allfi," which is probably already in the hands of the printer. A new work, also, by Carl Gutzkow, a pendant to the " Ritter von Geist," is shortly expected.

The literary treaty between France and Brunswick, the signing of which was announced some months ago, has been ratified and promulgated by the French Government. It has now, accordingly, the force of law.

The annual display of Illustrated and other suitable Gift-Books assumes an important epoch in our literary information. The promises for the approaching Christmas are by no means behind in artistic merit or utility. We purpose, on December 1, to give, as last year, an

Illustrated Supplement to the Publishers' Circular. Applications from publishers who desire to have any of their illustrations displayed to advantage, are therefore requested to be sent to the office EARLY.
