1. Explain what is meant by definition, and point out the distinction between nominal definitions, and those which are not nominal.

2. Give the meaning of the following terms: axiom, distribution of a term, mediate inference, mood, ambiguous middle term, illicit process of a term.

3. Give and explain the fundamental canons of the syllogism. State fully what is meant by the Dicta de omni et nullo of Aristotle. 4. Write out the rules of the syllogism. Which, if any, of these rules do the following syllogisms break?

(i) You and I are different persons. I am John; therefore

you are not John.

(ii) Oxford men are learned. A is a man of Oxford; therefore he is learned.

(iii) B became ill after exposure to bad air, therefore that exposure was the cause of his illness.

(iv) No man is perfect. Your son is no man; therefore he is perfect.

(v) The Board School system is not wholly to be approved of; but we may approve of the teaching of classics to girls, for that is not part of the Board School system.

5. Assuming the following premises (i) and (ii) to be correct, state whether any or all of the conclusions (iii), (iv), (v), (vi) are correct, and give fully your reasons:

(i) All authors are liable to error.

(ii) All authors possess energy.

(iii) All persons liable to error possess energy.

(iv) All persons possessing energy are liable to error.

(v) Some persons liable to error possess energy.

(vi) Some persons possessing energy are liable to error.

6. Write from memory the mnemonic verses containing the valid moods of the syllogism. Construct syllogisms in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th figures, and reduce them to corresponding moods of the first figure.

7. Write a short essay on logical method.

(ii) What is the advantage of a high rate of interest? Is this advantage likely to be permanent? Why is the rate of interest so low in England at present? Why does the rate of interest vary?

1. What are the advantages of division of labour?

2. "Political economists and legislators have generally drawn a distinction between land and all other forms of wealth." Prove this, and shew what reasons there are for this distinction. Give your opinion as to the value of these reasons.

3. Write an essay on competition, especially noting its effects at present in England.

4. Give a short account of any socialistic scheme with which you are acquainted. Distinguish between socialism and com

munism.

5. Discuss the economic results of slavery. Can you explain why slavery flourished in the southern part of the United States, while it did not exist in the northern part?

6. Point out some of the differences between an Irish farmer in Ireland, and an English farmer in England.

7. Tell me what you know of the following: a peasant proprietor, a cottier, ryot tenure, a metayer, the margin of cultivation, corn rents.
