This copy was presented to the Rev. T. Corser by Sir W. Stirling-Maxwell, and has his autograph presentation.

Only a small number of copies were printed, and these for private distribution.

The object which the learned editor had in view, in making these selections, was the improvement of armorial designs for plate, book-plates, stamps and furniture, which have hitherto been executed with a lamentable want of taste.

Stirling-Maxwell, illustrated by various contemporary Portraits of the Pope and the Emperor, and embellished by many Ornamental Designs in facsimile from books of the Sixteenth Century, half morocco, £6. 6s Edinburgh, 1875

David Laing's copy fetched £8. 15s.

The Introduction also contains portions in facsimile, on a somewhat reduced scale, of the extremely rare Venetian woodcut of the entry of Charles V into Bologna on the 15th of November, 1529, and the whole of the Procession after the Coronation, as engraved by COMERIO after BRUSASORCI's frieze in the Ridolfi Palace at Verona; and a facsimile of the principal group in

the Procession, as cut in wood by ROBERT PERIL at Antwerp in 1530-a print so rare that only one impression, that in the Museum at Antwerp, is known.

The whole forms a handsome Folio, bound in cloth, with morocco back, the sides being ornamented with the Armorial Bearings of the Pope and the Emperor-also in facsimile from contemporary sources.

Only Two Hundred and Fifty copies were printed.

6225 ANTWERP DELIVERED in mdlxxvii, a Passage from the History of the Troubles in the Netherlands, by Sir William StirlingMaxwell, illustrated with facsimiles of designs by MARTIN DE VOS, FRANZ HOGENBERG, and others, folio, bds. £5.

66

1878

Amongst the events of the history of the Troubles in the Netherlands during the reign of Philip II, few were more dramatic in their incidents or more important in their results than the abortive attempt of Don John of Austria, in the summer of 1577, to seize the citadel of Antwerp. It forms the subject of a rare series of prints, of which the designs were made by Martin de Vos, and the plates are attributed to the busy graver of the brothers Wiericx; & series well worthy of notice, both as an historical record and as an illustration of the manner in which the artists of the time pursued their peaceful labours in a country ravaged by war, and in cities ever menaced with siege and sack."

In this work the rare and fine series of Prints mentioned above is reproduced, and the Episode in the History of the Netherlands which they depict has been treated very fully by the author-a portion of the materials for his long-projected work on the career of Don John of Austria having been used for it.

The work is also illustrated by another set of prints of the same events, by Franz Hogenberg, and adorned with many beautiful Initial Letters, Ornamental Devices, Portraits, and rare allegorical Prints by artists of the time, all reproduced from the originals in the Keir Collection.

PARS I.

HARIOT (T.) de commodis et incolarum

ritibus Virginiæ, map and 28 plates

1590

In two states; first a copy of the earliest issue, 1590, very fine impressions of the plates before the title had engraved on it cum gratia et privilegia Cæs. Majest. ad quadriennium, which is printed in small italics on a narrow slip pasted on, and with Theodori and Feirabendii, also with triangular culs-de-lampe at the end of the Index and the Menda; secondly the same first edition, a SECOND ISSUE, with the cum gratia filled in, and the i taken off, and different culs-de-lampe.

The former of these two copies is in an earlier condition than Brunet has seen. He mentions the difference between the titles of the two issues as only consisting in an i more or less. Further the text in the second issue of the fourth plate of Picts is altered. The heading is in small capitals, the initial represents two men, the cul-de-lampe a small mask.
