to our judgment, an excellent biographical sketch of Chatterton... This Story
of the Year 1770, as Mr. Masson entitles it, stands for nearly 200 pages in his
volume, and contains, by preference, the fruits of his judgment and research in
an elaborated and discursive memoir. . . Its merit consists in the illustration
afforded by Mr. Masson's inquiries into contemporary circumstances, and the
clear traces thus obtained of Chatterton's London life and experience.

It is now about five years since the Prospectus of this Series was

first issued. Four volumes have now been published, and several others are in an advanced state. The reception which the volumes already published have met with, has fully justified the anticipation with which the Publishers commenced the Series, and warrants them in the belief, that their aim of supplying books "concise, comprehensive, and accurate," "convenient for the professional Student and interesting to the general reader," has been not unsuccessfully fulfilled.

The following paragraphs appeared in the original Prospectus, and may be here conveniently reproduced:

"The Authors being Clergymen of the English Church, and the Series being designed primarily for the use of Candidates for office in ber Ministry, the books will seek to be in accordance with her spirit and principles; and as the spirit and principles of the English Church teach charity and truth, so in treating of the opinions and principles of other communions, every effort will be made to avoid acrimony or misrepresentation.
