MEMOIR OF MR. G. H. BARRETT. MR. GEORGE H. BARRETT was born at Exeter, in England, on the 9th of June, 1794, and arrived at Boston, Mass., in October, 1796, accompanied by his mother, an actress of great ability : one of those shining lights who passed through the dramatic ordeal with the highest feelings of private respect. MR. BARRETT has been several years stage manager of some of our first class theatres. At the Bowery, under Gilfert in 1826, where he delivered the opening address ; at the Tremont, Boston, under Dana and Barry ; and lately at the new theatre erected by Col. Mann in Broadway. MR. BARRETT 'has always held the first rank among the best comedians of the day. Endowed by nature with a high flow of spirits, and polished by education, his dramatic exhibitions have always been highly relished by the multitude, the scholar, and the gentleman. He possesses a fine figure, a good voice, and a handsome countenance; is graceful in his action, thoroughly acquainted with the business of the stage, and knows how to make characters tell and render them successful and effective. As a farce actor, he is unrivalled, and in the higher walks of comedy, he has had few equals. His Charles in the “School for Scandal,” may dispute the palm of excellence with that of any other actor, and his Mercutio and parts of a similar cast, are worthy of much praise. In private life he is much esteemed, and his conduct both as an actor and a gentleman, has ever been alike honourable to himself and his profession. MR. BARRETT is still in the prime of life, and will, we trust, long continue to grace the boards of the American stage. MODERN STANDARD DRAMA. 4. The Stranger. CONTENTS OF THE VOLUMES. VOL. I. 5.
