Though a variety of books on the Topography, History, and Political situation of the United States, are already before the Public, the Author does not consider them as precluding the necessity of a work like the present. Independently of defects in the plan, the most valuable of the existing publications are not of a recent date; and this objection, though of little weight in some cases, is fatal to the usefulness of any work professing to describe a country like the United States; the progress of which is so rapid, that the best and most accurate account of its actual condition is superseded in a very few years by the changes constantly taking place. Besides, the subject is in itself so extensive, that though much has been done, it may be safely affirmed much remains to do, and that there is still ample room for the exercise of ingenuity and research, both in collecting materials, and in applying them to illustrate the various objects comprehended in the plan of the present work. The lapse of time, too, among other changes, has multiplied the sources of intelligence, has corrected many errors, developed many facts and events worthy of record, placed
