PROPOSALS

FOR PUBLISHING BY SUBSCRIPTION,

(FOR THE PURPOSE OF CONTRIBUTING TO THE ERECTION OF A VILLAGE SCHOOL IN THE PARISH OF BATH EASTON)

ILLUSTRATIONS

OF THE

EARLY HISTORY OF ENGLISH AND FRENCH POETRY,

BY THE REV. J. J. CONYBEARE,

Vicar of Bath Easton, Prebendary of York, and Professor of Poetry
in the University of Oxford.

THIS Work will consist of various reliques of Anglo-Saxon, early English, and Norman-French Poetry, hitherto inedited, or only partially known. Such as are given entire, will, where necessary, be accompanied by Translations and Notes; and of the longer and less interesting. an Analysis only, with occasional Specimens, will be attempted. A small portion of the Anglo-Saxon remains were incorporated into lectures delivered by the Author, in the years 1809, 1810, 1811, as Professor of that language in the University of Oxford, and have since appeared in the Archaeologia. With the exception of these, and one article which was inserted in a periodical publication, the materials may fairly be considered as new: and as the greater part of them is derived from sources unknown to, or but little examined by, previous writers on the subject, it is hoped that the Volume will be found not entirely unworthy the attention of those, whose studies have been turned to the early language and literature of this country. [A more detailed account of its proposed contents may be found in the Gentleman's Magazine for August last.]

It is proposed to publish one Volume in large Octavo, at the price of One Guinea. A few copies will be taken off in Quarto, of a size to range with Warton's History of English Poetry. The price of these latter will not exceed Three Guineas.

The whole Profits of the Publication will be appropriated to the Erection of a Parochial School-Room in the village of Bath Easton.

It is hoped that the Volume may be published early in the next year. The money to be paid on delivery.-The Impression will be limited.

Names are received in London, by Mr. ROBERT TRIPHOOK, Old Bond Street; Oxford, by Mr. PARKER; Bath, by Messrs. UPHAM and BARRAT; and in Edinburgh, by Messrs. CONSTABLE and LAING.

LYRICAL GLEANINGS,

COMPRISING

MADRIGALS, ODES,

SONGS, AND SONNETS,

CHIEFLY BY ANONYMOUS WRITERS OF THE XVIth AND PART
OF THE XVIIth CENTURIES;

WITH

BIBLIOGRAPHICAL NOTICES.

THE Gleanings will form One Volume, which will be printed at the Chiswick Press, in the most elegant manner, on fine writing paper, in post octavo, and only 250 Copies will be taken off.

The Materials will be drawn from those numerous, elegant, and as yet unexplored Collections of Vocal Poetry, made and composed by BIRD, MORLEY, YONGE, WARD, GIBBONS, LAWES, and other Musicians of eminence in the reigns of ELIZABETH, JAMES, and CHARLES: among them will be found specimens of eminent beauty, highly deserving rescue from the oblivion to which they have been hitherto consigned. It is therefore presumed that this Volume will prove highly acceptable to the tasteful lover of our Early Poetry, and at the same time form a valuable Supplement to the elegant Miscellanies of PERCY, AIRIN, RITSON, HEADLEY, and ELLIS.

From the limited impression, it will be desirable that those Gentle-men who may wish to possess the Work, should communicate their Names to Mr. TRIPHOOK, No. 23, Old Bond Street, without delay, as the number of Copies will on no account be extended.

ROBERT TRIPHOOK's Catalogue of Rare and Curious Books in all Languages, may be had on application at No 23, Old Bond Street; where he continues to purchase Libraries, or parcels of Old Books, on the most liberal terms.
