The day was intensely hot, not a breath of air could be found either to ruffle the waters of the bay or shake the dried-up leaves of the few trees that were to be found in the neighbourhood of Malaga, where, stretched out languidly on small iron bedsteads, placed on the cool-looking brick floor of our large and scantily furnished room, and endeavouring to exclude, with doors, windows, and shutters tightly closed, the heated outward air and the burning rays of a noon-day's summer sun, my companions and myself were trying to doze away the hours, till the evening shades should invite us to wander forth among the narrow paths of this curious and ancient town; not a sound was heard in the street, all labour was suspended, and even the dogs seemed taking their siesta when we were roused by the door opening, and the uncouth moso or waiter inquiring, in his queer mixture of languages, whether the signors would like to have places secured for the de funchien toro, which was to take place that evening; and that the celebrated matador, Signor Montes, the pride and delight of the frequenters of bull-fights, would be sure to make his appearance, having only just returned from that last abiding place of the princely and high-minded Moor-Grenada; and not having had the opportunity before of judging for ourselves as to the cruelty and excitement of this truly Spanish scene, which we had heard alike extolled both by signors and peasants, the stately signora, and even by the beautiful and youthful signorita, we gladly availed ourselves of the moso's experience to secure for us seats in the best or shady side of the amphitheatre. As the afternoon approached, the increasing bustle of the town, together with the numerous arrivals from the neighbouring villages, made us aware that something more than usual was going on, and warned us that it was time for us to be moving; so, putting on our wide brimmed Etruscan straw hats, and arraying ourselves in white as much as possible, we sallied forth to find our way to the bull-ring: this was no arduous task, although we were quite strangers in the place, for men, women, and children were continually pouring out of the numerous narrow streets, all bending their steps towards the same spot, delight and pleasure sparkling from their sloe-black eyes; the men dressed in the extreme of Spanish dandyism, for they always make a point of appearing at their annual bull-fights decked out in their very best, and even stint themselves for weeks of the necessaries of life in order to appear, and that well dressed too, at these meetings; the women all attired in handsome black mantillas, gracefully thrown over the comb at the back of their heads, and shading their clear, olive complexions with their gaudy fans. Joining the stream, we soon found ourselves presenting our tickets to one of the numerous soldiers or nationals placed around |
