160.

Christ dying, rising, and reigning.

HE E dies! the Friend of sinners dies!
Lo, Salem's daughters weep around!
A solemn darkness veils the skies,
A sudden trembling rocks the ground!

L.M.

2 Come, saints, and drop a tear or two
For Him who groan'd beneath your load!
He shed a thousand drops for you,
A thousand drops of richer blood!

3 Here's love and grief beyond degree-
The Lord of Glory dies for men!
But lo, what sudden joys I see!
Jesus the dead revives again!

4 The rising God forsakes the tomb,
Up to his Father's court he flies;
Cherubic legions guard him home,
And shout him welcome to the skies!

5 Break off your tears, ye saints, and tell
How high our great Deliv'rer reigns;
Sing how he spoil'd the hosts of hell,
And led the monster Death in chains!

6 Say, Live for ever, wondrous King,
Born to redeem and strong to save!
Then ask the monster, "Where's thy sting?
And where's thy vict'ry, boasting grave?'

161.

Godly Sorrow arising from the Sufferings of Christ. [Tune, Expiation.

I ALAS! and did my Saviour bleed,

And did my Sov'reign die?
Would he devote that sacred head
For such a worm as I?

2 Was it for sins that I had done
He groan'd upon the tree?
Amazing pity, grace unknown,
And love beyond degree!

3 Well might the sun in darkness hide,
And shut his glories in,
When God the mighty Maker died
For man the creature's sin!

4 Thus might I hide my blushing face
While his dear cross appears;
Dissolve my heart in thankfulness,
And melt my eyes to tears.

5 But drops of grief can ne'er repay
The debt of love I owe;
Here, Lord, I give myself away,
'Tis all that I can do!

162.

The Hopes of Heaven our Support under Trials

on Earth.

1 WHEN I can read my title clear

To mansions in the skies,

I'll bid farewell to ev'ry fear,

And dry my weeping eyes.

C. M.

2 Should earth against my soul engage,
And hellish darts be hurl'd,
Then I can smile at Satan's rage
And face a frowning world.

3 Let cares like a wild deluge come,
And storms of sorrow fall,
May I but safely reach my home,
My God, my heav'n, my all!

4 There shall I bathe my weary soul
In seas of heav'nly rest,
And not a wave of trouble roll
Across my peaceful breast.

163.

Perseverance.

1 REJOICE, believer in the Lord,
Who makes your cause his own;
The hope that's built upon his word
Can ne'er be overthrown.

2 Tho' many foes beset your road,
And feeble is your arm,

Your life is hid with Christ in God
Beyond the reach of harm.

3 Weak as you are you shall not faint,
Or fainting shall not die;
Jesus, the strength of ev'ry saint,
Will aid you from on high.

4 Tho' sometimes, unperceiv'd by sense,
Faith sees him always near;

A guide, a glory, a defence!
Then what have you to fear?

C. M.

5 As surely as he overcame
And triumph'd once for you,
So surely, you that love his name,
Shall triumph in him too.

I sat down under his shadow with great delight.

[Tune, Sproxton.

1 SWEET the moments, rich in blessing,
Which before the cross I spend;
Life, and health, and peace possessing
From the sinner's dying Friend.
Here I sit, with wonder viewing
Mercy flow in streams of blood;
Precious drops my soul bedewing,
Plead and claim my peace with God.
2 Truly blessed is the station

Low before his cross to lie,
While I see divine compassion
Floating in his languid eye.
Here it is I find my heaven,
the Lamb I gaze;
Love I much! I've much forgiven,
I'm a miracle of grace!

While

upon

3 Love and grief my heart dividing
With my tears his feet I'd bathe;
Constant still in faith abiding,
Life deriving from his death.
May I still enjoy this feeling,
In all need to Jesus go;

Prove his wounds each day more healing,
And himself more deeply know!

165.

Christ our Strength.

1 LET me but hear my Saviour say,
Strength shall be equal to thy day;
Then I'll rejoice in deep distress,
Leaning on all-sufficient grace!
2 1 glory in infirmity,

L.M.

That Christ's own pow'r may rest on me;
When I am weak then am I strong,
Grace is my shield, and Christ my song!

3 I can do all things, and can bear
All suff'rings, if my Lord be here;
Sweet pleasures mingle with the pains,
While his left hand my head sustains.
4 Kindly he brings me to the place
Where stands the banquet of his grace;
And, when I faint, he o'er my head
The banner of his love will spread.

5 How shine those hands which on the tree Were nail'd, and torn, and bled for me! And glory, like a crown, adorns

Those temples once beset with thorns.

6 Tho' once he bow'd his feeble knees,
Loaded with sins and agonies,
Now at his feet the seraphs stand,
And wait to know his high command.
7 Jesus, thou everlasting King,
Accept the tribute which we bring;
Accept thy well-deserv'd renown,
And wear our praises as thy crown
