LINCOLN IN HIS CIRCUIT-RIDING DAYS

He sat for this picture in a borrowed coat at the suggestion of the photographer

His client, however, who had four hundred thousand dollars at stake, lost heart when he beheld the brilliant talent arrayed against his homely country lawyer, and he called Edwin M. Stanton to his aid. Stanton carried matters with a high hand and ignored Lincoln, who, through an open door in a hotel, heard him scornfully exclaim, "Where did that long-armed creature come from and what can he expect to do in this case?" Again he pictured him as "a long, lank creature from Illinois, wearing a dirty linen duster for a coat, on the back of which the perspiration had splotched wide stains that resembled a map of the continent."

The unknown and melancholy stranger, without friends in the city, saw himself shut out of the trial of a celebrated case in which he had hoped to win distinction. He was deeply humiliated, but he drew a lesson from his bitter experience and observation in Cincinnati. He frankly recognized that the lawyers there, college-bred men, were better trained than the lawyers on the old circuit. He saw that educated attorneys were working their way steadily toward the West. "They study their cases as we never do," he said. Illinois and I am going home to study law. I am as good as any of them, and when they get out to Illinois, I shall be ready for them."

Read Psalm 67

With thee is the fountain of life: in thy light shall we see light. -Psalm 36:9

THIS year my brother's daughters gave me an

unusual Christmas gift. The package contained an assortment of articles-a plate, jar, saucer, can lid, plastic bowl, spray lid, chimney, candle, and candle ring. That doesn't sound like very much of a gift; but when I put them together, they were transformed into a beautiful lamp.

Jesus can transform us.

. He takes our bits and pieces and makes us something beautiful and shining.

He takes away bitterness and strife and puts us together with His love.

Each of us becomes a special person because Christ has made it possible.

*PRAYER: Dear Father, we thank Thee for Thy transforming love and power. May Thy light shine throughout the world, dispelling the darkness. We pray the prayer Thy Son taught His disciples, "Our Father, who art in heaven. . . . Amen."

THOUGHT FOR THE DAY

Jesus Christ can make my life beautiful.

*See footnote, p. 11.
