By Mr. C. J. Ingersoll: A petition of the Philadelphia and Reading Railroad Company, in the State of Pennsylvania, to remit the duties paid by them on railroad iron during the current year: which was referred to the Committee of Ways and Means.

By Mr. John Quincy Adams: A petition of inhabitants of the State of Massachusetts, to procure an amendment of the constitution so as to abolish slavery: which was referred to the Committee on the Judiciary. And then, on motion of Mr. Cobb, the House, at half-past 2 o'clock, adjourned until to-morrow, at 12 o'clock meridian.

The following petitions, memorials, and other papers, were laid on the Clerk's table this day, under the 24th rule of the House, to wit:

By Mr. Owen: Five petitions of citizens of the State of Indiana, for a grant of land to complete the Wabash and Erie canal.

By Mr. Dawson: A petition of John L. Harris, of Madison parish, in the State of Louisiana, for the passage of an act to allow him to enter a lot of ground in said parish.

Ordered, That said petitions be referred to the Committee on Public Lands.

By Mr. Vance: The petition of the heirs of James Conway-heretofore presented December 15, 1841: which was referred to the Committee on Revolutionary Claims.

By Mr. Barnard: A petition of Justin Jacobs, an enlisted soldier in the ordnance corps, for a pension on account of disability: which was referred to the Committee on Invalid Pensions.

By Mr. Isaac E. Morse: A petition of Edward J. Heard, of St. Martin's parish, in the State of Louisiana, to be permitted to purchase a tract of land from the general government: which was referred to the Committee on Private Land Claims.

Also, a petition of the Red River Railroad Company of the State of Louisiana, for allowance of drawback on certain iron laid on said road.

By Mr. J. R. Ingersoll: The petition of Rebecca Guest, widow and executrix of John Guest, late of the city of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania-heretofore referred February 6, 1840.

By Mr. Hamlin: A petition of citizens of the State of Maine, for a lighthouse at the entrance of Gilkey's harbor, in said State.

By Mr. Simons: A petition of citizens of Bridgeport, in the State of Connecticut, for a light-house at the entrance of Bridgeport harbor.

By Mr. Charles M. Reed: A petition of ship-owners of the State of New York, for the passage of an act to prohibit Canadian steamboats from carrying passengers coastwise on the American shore of lake Erie;

Also, a petition of citizens of Buffalo, in the State of New York, to make

an appropriation to improve the harbor of Manitou woc, on lake Michigan.

Ordered, That said petitions be referred to the Committee on Commerce. By Mr. Severance: A petition of citizens of Augusta, in the State of Maine, to abolish slavery in the District of Columbia and the Territory of Florida: which was referred to the Committee for the District of Columbia.

By Mr. Barringer: A petition of citizens of Lincoln county, in the State of North Carolina, in favor of rebuilding the branch mint at Charlotte, in said State which was referred to the Committee of Ways and Means.

By Mr. Bidlack: A petition of Stephen C. Ford, for indemnity for loss sustained by furnishing goods to the United States troops at Carlisle, in the State of Pennsylvania, in the year 1841: which was referred to the Committee of Claims.

By Mr. Jameson: A petition of citizens of Boon and Call counties, in the State of Missouri, for a post-route from Columbia to Jefferson city, in said State.

By Mr. Isaac E. Morse: A petition of citizens of Union parish, in the State of Louisiana, for a post-route from Farmville, in said parish, to El Dorado, in Union county, in the State of Arkansas;

Also, a petition of citizens of De Soto parish, in the State of Louisiana, for the establishment of a post office at Mansfield, in said parish.

Ordered, That said petitions be referred to the Committee on the Post Office and Post Roads.

By Mr. Leonard: A petition of Mrs. Ann Duryea, of Morris county, in the State of New York, for a pension.

By Mr. Anderson: The petition of Peter Wilson, of Westchester county, in the State of New York-heretofore presented February 10, 1844.

Ordered, That said petitions be referred to the Committee on Revolutionary Pensions.

By Mr. Stiles: A petition of F. W. Heineman, administrator of Captain John Jackson, deceased, late of the United States revenue service, for an increase of pay while acting as an officer in said service: which was referred to the Committee of Claims.

By Mr. Steenrod: Documents relating to the establishment of a marine hospital at the city of Wheeling, in the State of Virginia: which were referred to the Committee on Commerce.

By Mr. Wentworth: A petition of inhabitants of the State of Illinois and Wisconsin Territory, for a mail-route from Janesville, in Wisconsin Territory, to Belvidere, in Illinois: which was referred to the Committee on the Post Office and Post Roads.

By Mr. McCauslen: A petition of citizens of Carroll county, in the State of Ohio, for a reduction of the price of public lands: which was referred to the Committee of the Whole on the state of the Union.

By Mr. Joseph Morris: A petition of Josiah Dillon, of the State of Ohio, for the repayment of money furnished by him for the use of the United States army during the last war: which was referred to the Committee of Claims.

By Mr. Joseph R. Ingersoll: A memorial of William Norris & Co., of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, to refund duties paid by them on foreign iron: which was referred to the Committee of Ways and Means. Also, a memorial of citizens of the city and county of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, for a prompt and final decision in the case of

the Hon. David Levy, acting delegate from Florida, in the charge that he is ineligible to a seat in Congress, as an alien: which was referred to the Committee on the Judiciary.

By Mr. Simons: The petition of citizens of Bridgeport, in the State of Connecticut-heretofore presented February 14, 1838.

By Mr. Joseph R. Ingersoll: Two petitions of citizens of the city and county of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, to rebuild the piers at Port Penn, on the Delaware river;

Also, a memorial of the select and common council of the city of Philadelphia, in the State of Pennsylvania, of like import.

Ordered, That said petitions and memorial be referred to the Committee on Commerce.

By Mr. Rathbun: A petition of Mrs. Sarah Van Pelt, of Cortland county, in the State of New York, widow of John Van Pelt, for a pension: which was referred to the Committee on Revolutionary Pensions.

By Mr. Chilton: The petition of Gustavus B. Horner-heretofore presented January 29, 1844: which was referred to the Committee on Revolutionary Claims.

By Mr. Catlin Additional evidence in the case of the heirs of the Rev. David Avery-heretofore presented: which was referred to the Committee on Revolutionary Pensions.

On motion of Mr. Dromgoole, the rules were suspended, and the House resolved itself into the Committee of the Whole House on the state of the Union; and, after some time spent therein, the Speaker resumed the chair, and Mr. Cave Johnson reported that the committee having, according to order, had the state of the Union generally under consideration, particu larly the bill (No. 216) to provide for the collection, safekeeping, transfer, and disbursement of the public revenue, had come to no resolution thereon. Mr. Dromgoole moved the following resolution:

Resolved, That all debate in the Committee of the Whole House on the state of the Union on House bill (No. 216) to provide for the collection, safekeeping, transfer, and disbursement of the public revenue, shall cease in two hours after the same shall be again taken up in committee; and the committee shall then report it to the House, with such amendments as may have been agreed to by the committee.

Pending the question on which, the House, at thirty minutes past o'clock, on motion of Mr. Cave Johnson, adjourned until to-morrow, at 12 o'clock meridian.

SATURDAY, DECEMBER 21, 1844.

Two other members, to wit:

From the State of Mississippi, Tilghman M. Tucker;

appeared, and took their seats.

The House resumed the consideration of the resolution moved by Mr. Dromgoole, and pending when the House adjourned yesterday.

Mr. Dromgoole moved the previous question, which was seconded; and the main question was ordered and put, to wit: Will the House agree to the said resolution?

And decided in the affirmative.

On motion of Mr. Dromgoole, the House resolved itself into the Committee of the Whole House on the state of the Union; and, after some

time spent therein, the Speaker resumed the chair, and Mr. Cave Johnson reported that the committee having, according to order, had the state of the Union generally under consideration, particularly the bill (No. 216) to provide for the collection, safekeeping, transfer, and disbursement of the public revenue, had directed him to report the said bill to the House, with amendments.

The House proceeded to the consideration of the said bill; the question being on agreeing to the amendments reported from the Committee of the Whole House on the state of the Union.

The said amendments were read.

After debate,

The previous question was moved by Mr. David L. Seymour; and the main question was ordered and put, to wit: First, Will the House agree to the said amendments?

And decided in the affirmative.

The question was put, Second, Shall the said bill be engrossed and read the third time to-day?
