Legislative Assembly of Wisconsin Territory,
Extra Session: Beguo and held at Madison, the seat of Government, on Monday the third day of August, A. D. 1840, pursuant to an act of the said Assembly, entitled “ An act to provide for taking the census or enumeration of the inhabitants of this Territory, and to fix the time of holding an extra session of the Legislative Assembly,". approved Jannary 11, A. D. 1840.
On which day the following named members of the House of Representatives appeared and took their seats, viz:
From the county of Brown-Messrs. Childs, Conroe, Shackleford and Sholes.
From the county of Milwaukee--Mr. Ray.. .
From the county of Racine-Messrs. Hoyt, Newman 'and Stevens.
From the counties of Rock and Walworth-Messrs. Beardsley and Whiton.
From the counties of Green, Dane, Jefferson and Dodge--Mr. Sutherland.
From the county of Iowa---Messrs. Billings and Jenkins.
From the county of Crawford--Messrs. Brunson and McGregor.
On motion of Mr. Childs,
Mr. Billings nominated Henry B. Towsley for the office of
The nomination of Mr. Billings was first put, and was decided in the affirmative.
On motion of Mr. McGregor,
On motion of Mr. Ray,
On motion of Mr. Sholes,
On motion of Mr. Childs, ' Ordered, That the rules and orders adopted for the government of this House at the last session, be adopted until others are pre. pared and adopted.
On motion of Mr. Sholės,
3 O'CLOCK, P. M. · Mr. Craig, from the county of Grant, appeared and took his seat.
Mr. Sholes, from the committee appointed to inform the Council that the House had temporarily organized, reported that they had performed that duty.
· Mr. Childs offered the following resolution, which was adopted :
Resolved, That a committee of two be appointed on the part of this House, to act in conjunction with a committee to be appointed on the part of the Council, to wait on His Excellency the Gover. nor, and inform him that the two houses have organized pro tempore, and are ready to receive any communication he may have to make them.
The following message was received from the Council by their Secretary:
" Mr. Speaker-I am directed to inform you that Messrs. Rountree and Bullen have been appointed a committee on the part of the Council, to act in conjunction with a similar committee on the part of this House, to wait on the Governor, and inform him that the two Houses are now in organization, pro tempore, and ready to receive any communication he may have to make them.
The Speaker laid before the House a communication from the Secretary of the Territory, enclosing impressions of seals engraved for the Territory, and a communication from Wm. Wagner, the engraver. The said communications were read, and
On motion of Mr. Sholes,
Resolved, That the Editors of the Madison Enquirer be authorized to do the printing of this House during the present session.
Mr. Billings moved to amend the resolution by striking there. from the word “Madison,” and inserting in lieu thereof the word “ Wisconsin."
Mr. Shackelford moved to lay the resolution on the table ;
Mr. Childs, from the joint committtee appointed to inform the Governor of the organization of the two Houses, pro tem. re.
