8 And Stephen, full of faith and power, did great wonders and miracles among the people. 9 ¶ Then there arose certain of the synagogue, which is called the synagogue of the Libertines, and Cyrenians, and Alexandrians, and of them of Cilicia and of Asia, disputing with Stephen.

10 And they were not able to resist the wisdom and the spirit by which he spake.

11 "Then they suborned men, which said, We have heard him speak blasphemous words against Moses, and against God.

12 And they 'stirred up the people, and the lders, and the Scribes, and came upon him, f the prophets, according to the commandment of the eversting God, made known to all nations for the obedience of ith. 2 Cor. x. 5: Casting down imaginations, and every igh thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, nd bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of hrist.

CHAP. VII.

1 Stephen, permitted to answer to the accusation of blasphemy, 2 showeth that Abraham worshipped God rightly, and how God chose the fathers 20 before Moses was born, and before the tabernacle and temple were built: 37 that Moses himself witnessed of Christ, 44 and that all outward ceremonies were ordained according to the heavenly pattern, to last but for a time: 51 reprehending their rebellion, and murdering of Christ, the Just One, whom the prophets foretold should come into the world: 54 whereupon they stone him to death, who commendeth his soul to Jesus, and humbly prayeth for them.

THEN said the High Priest, Are these things so?

5 And he gave him none inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on:2 yet he promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, 'when as yet he had no child.

8 And he gave him the covenant of circumcision: and so 'Abraham begat Isaac, and circumno seed. In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates. do. xvii. 8: And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God. do. xxvi. 3 : Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father.

8 GEN. XV. 13, 16: He said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not their's, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years. But in the fourth generation they shall come hither again.

EXOD. iii. 12: And he said, Certainly I will be with thee; and this shall be a token unto thee, that I have sent thee: When thou hast brought forth the people out of Egypt, ye shall serve God upon this mountain.

KGEN. xvii. 9-11 : God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee in their generations. This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised. And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin, and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you.

• GEN. xxxvii. 4, 11, 28: When his brethren saw that their father loved him [Joseph] more than all his brethren, they hated him, and could not speak peaceably unto him. And his brethren envied him. Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver: and they brought Joseph into Egypt. Ps. cv. 17: He sent a man before them, even Joseph, who was sold for a servant.

P GEN. XXXIX. 2, 21, 23: The LORD was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man.-The LORD was with Joseph, and showed him mercy, and gave him favour in the sight of the keeper of the prison. The keeper of the prison looked not to any thing that was under his hand; because the LORD was with him, and that which he did, the LORD made it to prosper. WISD. X. 13: When the righteous was sold, she forsook him not, but delivered him from sin: she went down with him into the pit.

9 1 SAM. xvii. 37: David said moreover, The LORD that delivered me out of the paw of the lion, and out of the paw of the bear, he will deliver me out of the hand of this Philistine. Ps. xxxiv. 19: Many are the afflictions of the righteous: but the LORD delivereth him out of them all. PRO. xxiv. 16: A just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again. 2 Cor. i. 10: Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us. 2 TIM. iii. 11: Persecutions, afflictions, which came unto me at Antioch, at Iconium, at Lystra; what persecutions I endured: but out of them all the Lord delivered me.
