38 And he commanded the chariot to stand still:16 and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him. 39 And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way 'rejoicing.

40 But Philip was found at Azotus: and passing through he preached in all the cities, till he came to Cæsarea.

CHAP. IX.

This being the first notice of St. Paul's being called to be a Preacher and an Apostle to the Jews, but more particularly to the Gentiles, and these subjects being often mentioned together, the references relating to them are brought together in this place, which

name before the Gentiles, "and kings, and the children of Israel:

will be referred to when any of them occur in the following parts of the New Testament. The reader will easily apply that which relates to the apostle's being chosen, called, or ordained, what to his preaching to the Jews, and what to the Gentiles. ACTS, xiii. 2, 46, 47: As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them. Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, lo, we turn to the Gentiles. But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother's womb, and called me by his grace, to reveal his Son in me, that I might preach him among the heathen. do. ii. 2, 7-9: I went up [to Jerusalem] by revelation, and communicated unto them that Gospel which I preach among the Gentiles.-When they saw that the Gospel of the uncircumcision was cominitted unto me, as the Gospel of the circumcision was unto Peter; (For he that wrought effectually in Peter to the apostleship of the circumcision, the same was mighty in me toward the Gentiles :) And when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we should go unto the heathen, and they unto the circumcision. EPH. iii. 2, 7, 8: If ye have heard of the dispensation of the grace of God which is given me to you-ward. Whereof [the Gospel] I was made a minister, according to the gift of the grace of God given unto me.-Unto me, who am less than the least of all saints, is this grace given, that I should preach among the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ. 1 TIM. ii. 7: Whereunto I am ordained a preacher, and an apostle,-a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity. 2 TIM. i. 11: Whereunto I am appointed a preacher, and an apostle, and a teacher of the Gentiles. do. iv. 17 The Lord stood with me, and strengthened me; that by me the preaching might be fully known, and that all the Gentiles might hear.

"ACTS, xxv. 22, 23: Then Agrippa said unto Festus, I would also hear the man myself. To morrow, said he, thou shalt hear him. And on the morrow, when Agrippa was come, and Bernice, with great pomp, and was entered into the place of hearing, with the chief captains, and principal men of the city, at Festus' commandment Paul was brought forth. do. xxvi. 1, &c: Then Agrippa said unto Paul, Thou art permitted to speak for thyself. Then Paul stretched forth the hand, and answered for himself.

Acтs, xx. 23: The Holy Ghost witnesseth in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions abide me. do. xxi. 11, 33: [Agabus] took Paul's girdle, and bound his own hands and feet, and said, Thus saith the Holy Ghost, So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man that owneth this girdle, and shall deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles. The chief captain came near, and took him, and commanded him to be bound with two chains; and demanded who he was, and what he had done. do. xxiv. 27: Felix, willing to show the Jews a pleasure, left Paul bound.
