ment of each having an elegant border formed of flowers, birds, infants, and golden studs. The volume is further decorated with innumerable capitals alternately in gold and colour. The numerous large initials are also in gold ornamented with burning branches, which no doubt formed the device of the owner.

Old French blue morocco, gilt edges, the back full gilt and ornamented with armorial bearings (a fox passant, a French regal crown between 2 mullets in chief), £275. SEC. XVI 37 SPECULUM VITE, a Mirror of Life, in English, smallest folio, (8vo.) interesting English Manuscript on VELLUM, old russia, with some interesting MS. notes inserted by the late Mr. John Bruce the antiquary, £100. circa 1380

Formerly in the collection of Mr. Singer, from whose hand is the following description:

[ocr errors]

The MYRROUR OF LIFE, formerly attributed to Richard Rolle, or Richard of Hampole, residing in or near the Nunnery of Hampole, near Doncaster; but as it appears from MS. Reg. c. viij, pointed out by Sir F. Madden, it is a translation from the Latin of John of Waldby, by William of Nassyngton. The poem begins with the spiritual advantages of the Lord's Prayer, of its seven petitions, their offices, &c. &c. and ends with the seven Beautitudes. In the course of enumerating the vices and virtues, much that is interesting, as illustrating modes of life and manners, occurs; and I know that Mr. Douce had made large extracts from the MS. in the Brit. Museum on this account. For instance, in the section, DE TEMERARIO OFFICIO ET ARTIFICIO, fol. 886, the following characters are sketched-Common Women, Jugglers, Snek-drawers or Roberds-men, Faitours or Beggars, Harlots (seemingly Wandering Minstrels), Heralds, Champions, Tollers of Market Towns, and Hangmen. Onc is rather surprised to find the Heralds in such company, but they are accused of taking care of their advantage in adjudging the prize at Justings and Tournaments to grete lordings, hallooing names with great cry, &c. The Harlots are thus described: "Harlotes walkes thorw many touns,

With specked mantels and bourdouns,
And ilk mans hows they go in
Thare they hope ouze to wyn.

Bot Harlotes men calles namly

Alle that haunte Harlotry.

Harlotes falles ay stonde on the flore

And play some time at the spore

At the bene and at the cat

A fowle play hald I that.

When men biddes tham for thair fe

Thay say-Maystres wol mot zc be.
For the rwle of thair religion

Is suche by thair profession;

This is a poynt of tham ilk tyme

To licken men thare they come in ryme.

Zit use they ofte other japes

Some ledes beres and some ledes apes,

That mas joy and solace to tham that sees

Al thes er folys and niceties."

This MS. is beautifully written, and was formerly in the Library of the Fermors, a distinguished Catholic family at Tusmore, in Oxfordshire, so well known from Belinda the heroine of the Rape of the Lock. The first leaf is unfortunately wanting. At the end (the recto of folio 200) is the following colophon :

"Explicit tractatus de oracione dmca s. de Pater Noster. In quo reprehendentur multa vicia. Et in quo continentur oms virtutes quo in hac vita degentibus sunt necessarie. Et specialiter illiteratis docende, ad Dei honorem. Hic liber est scriptus-qui scripsit sit benedictus."

38 STUKELEY (W.) COMMON-PLACE BOOK, folio, Autograph Manuscript of this celebrated Antiquary, with numerous valuable original drawings, having 2 holograph letters of R. Thoresby and E. Prideaux to J. Anstis added by Dr. Stukeley, £96. 1717-48

circ. 1470

The drawings are very valuable to the Topographical Collector, and embrace Ruins of Whitehall, Scite of Old Verolam and St. Albans, Druidical Stones and other Remains, Plan of Abury," My House at Barnhill, Stamford," Celtic Antiquities, various ancient Monuments (severel coloured) in Norfolk, Lincolnshire, Yorkshire, &c. 39 TERENTII COMŒDLE, Svo. FINE MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM, by an Italian Scribe, with initial letters finely illuminated in gold and colours, an elcgant border, with coat of arms on the first leaf, blue morocco extra, gilt edges, by C. Lewis, £50. 40 VALENCIAN MISSAL: INCIPIT LIBER MISSALIS, SECUNDUM CONSUETUDINEM SEDIS VALENTIÆ, CUM CALENDARIO, large folio, SPLENDID SPANISH MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM, finely illuminated in gold and colours, the first page of text ornamented with an EXQUISITE ARABESQUE BORDER, displaying the arms of the owner supported by flying cupids, and a BEAUTIFUL MINIATURE of the Annunciation richly painted in colours and heightened with gold. Before the Canon of the Mass are TWO LARGE PAINTINGS (12 by 8 inches) of the ECCE HOMO and the CRUCIFIXION, by an EARLY SPANISHI ARTIST, admirably executed in vivid colours heightened with gold; the whole volume in astonishingly perfect preservation, and bound in the original oak boards, covered with stamped morocco, £148.

SEC. XV (1477)

This splendid manuscript was written in the year 1477, as appears from the first leaf of calendar which commences" In hoc Anno Domini m cccc.lxxvii est littera dominicalis e ut in cruce." Specimens of early Spanish art are excessively rare, and the present MS. is one so remarkably fine and so brilliantly decorated, in the Italian style, which then came into use amongst the Spaniards, that it would form a specially valuable feature in any palæographical collection. There is, as compared with the Italianesque ornamentation, a more distinctive character in the two large paintings, which are truly imposing works of Art. The face of the mother in the picture of the Crucifixion is an extremely beautiful specimen.

41 Welsh.

GAMBOLD (W.) English-Welsh and Welsh-English Dictionary, 2 vols. sin 4to. with Welsh Grammar, sm. Svo. ; together 3 vols. AUTOGRAPH MANUSCRIPT, calf gilt, £10.

This valuable Dictionary was never printed. The Grammar was published in 1727. There are apparently some two or three MS. copies of the Dictionary in existence, all written by Gambold himself, in an extremely neat and elegant character. 41*PALEOGRAPHICA: a royal folio volume, interleaved with more than 40 fine specimens of Calligraphy and Illumination, being fragments of varying size and character out of MSS. on Vellum, ranging from the eleventh to the fifteenth centuries, bound in half red morocco, £28.

Sec. X-XV

This collection displays work of the early Lombard and Burgundian schools, and of the French, English and Flemish styles, with some curious ones of German origin. There are very fine specimens of Flemish Art, miniatures richly illuminated on a large scale; and amongst the French there is a late but splendid example of the Grisaille. At the end of the original fragments, a considerable number of engraved facsimiles from MSS. is inserted.

The MS. is considered by Sir Thomas Duffus Hardy, who stands almost alone in his opinion, to have been written in the sixth century; while the new Palæographical school (at the head of which is Mr. Bond) and many other scholars give indignant denial to such a claim of antiquity, and refer it to various periods between the Ninth and Eleventh Centuries.
