This is the most important and trustworthy of all the works that exist on the interesting subject of Medieval Costume. The ideas of most people in this respect, are very vague, being derived from pretty picture-books of fancy figures, in which nothing like precision or scientific treatment is ever met with. Indeed, Hefner's work may almost be called the only safe guide in this branch of Archæology, which ought to be so attractive to the painter and to the general student of history and manners. 256 HELYOT (P.) This extremely interesting and valuable work shows the dress of all classes of the French people from the King to the lower orders for a space of 1350 years. It includes Portraits of celebrated characters in the appropriate costume of their day, and in fact is an epitome of Montfaucon with the additional advantage of colour, and a continuation since his time. The only extensive work on the History of Glass, with illustrations ever published. Mr. Felix SLADE's privately printed Catalogue, one volume folio, cannot be procured except at the extravagant price of £42.

The collection comprised in this volume includes the Origin of Glass Manufacture, the Art of Glass making in Asia, in Egypt, in Italy, and in Rome, Flexible Glass, Drinking Glasses, Inscriptions on Vessels, Imitations of Cameos and Precious Stones, Lachrymatories, chiefly from the Roman Catacombs, Cinerary Urns, and Beads, included in about four hundred specimens of Antique Glass which have been handed down to the present time.

A morocco copy was priced, 1847, £28.; half morocco, £18. 188. Denon's Catalogue of his own extraordinary collection of Antiquities, Curiosities, Paintings, Drawings, and Works of Art. It was printed at his private expense, and only given away in presents. Copies have been sold abroad for large sums, and but few have reached this country. Brunet, in speaking of this fine work, says, "Recueil intéressant, tiré à 250 exemplaires seulement. Le premier volume est specialement consacré à l'histoire des Arts du Dessin chez les differens peuples du monde; les trois autres se rapportent à l'Histoire de la Peinture en Europe, depuis l'epoque de la renaissance des Arts."
