The committee on Education to whom was referred A bill to purchase Strong's History of Wisconsin Territory for the use of the public schools of the state, Have had the same under consideration and given such parts of the manuscript of the work, which it is proposed by the bill to have purchased by the state, as are now written, such examination as their time and other duties would admit of, and find that it is clearly and concisely written, bearing evidences of careful and tireless research, and believe, when completed and published, it will fully supply a want long felt for an exhaustive and thoroughly reliable history of the early days of Wisconsin, yet it will not be such a work as can in any sense be regarded as a text book for our common schools. The passage of the bill will involve the expenditure of from twenty-four to thirty-two thousand dollars. Whether such an expenditure for the purpose contemplated would be wise, your committee do not desire to decide affirmatively, and as it is properly the province of the joint committee on Claims to consider and decide questions of this character, I am instructed to report this bill back to the senate with the recommendation that it take that reference.
