Observe, my dear children, the mildness, kindness, and gentleness of your Saviour: instead of being angry with his apostles for their timidity and weakness of faith, he condescended to show them his hands and feet, and desired them to touch him, and see that it was he himself; and afterwards ate before them. He then gave them perceive that it was necessary for the salvation of mankind, that Christ should die: and that his death and resurrection were predicted in the Scriptures: and he accompanied this his first appearance to his apostles, with these words of consolation, "Peace be unto you." Peace on earth, you remember, was promised by the angels to mankind when the Saviour of the world was born. Whenever you feel strife and anger arise in your hearts, think how far you are from following the example of your mild and benevolent Saviour; and consider how unworthy you must be of the name of Christian, if you do not possess the Christian virtues of peace and love. Never

forget Christ's words, "By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another."

A peace the world can never give,
A peace that doth for ever live,

The Saviour breath'd, while here he stood,
Clothed once again in flesh and blood.

Calm 'midst the stormiest scenes of earth,
The children of the second birth

Are gently borne o'er life's wild waves,
Though rude the tempest round them raves.

Peace to his own beloved child,
When life and all its powers decay,
The everlasting arms are there,
In life his help, in death his stay.

Peace doth he speak to all the world;
All sin, all pain, all care shall cease,
When Jesus comes his saints to bless
And reign the eternal Prince of peace.

LESSON THIRTY-NINTH.

LUKE XXIV. 50. ACTS I. 9-12.

AND he led them out as far as to Beth-a-ny, and he lift-ed up his hands and bless-ed them and while they be-held, he was tak-en up; and a cloud re-ceiv-ed him out of their sight. And while they look-ed up sted-fast-ly to-ward heav-en, as he went up, be-hold two men stood by them in white ap-par-el, which al-so said, "Ye men of Gal-i-lee, why stand ye gaz-ing up in-to heav-en? This same Je-sus, which is tak-en up from you in-to heav-en, shall so come in like man-ner as ye have seen him go in-to heav-en." Then re-turn-ed they un-to Je-ru-sa-lem, from the mount call-ed Ol-i-vet, which is from Je-ru-sa-lem a Sabbath day's jour-ney.
