'Many are called, but few chosen." What is meant by being called?

Hearing the Gospel preached. What is meant by being chosen? Owned at the last day by Christ, as his people.

The Jews were very angry at the Gospel being preached to the Gentiles, whom they despised, and even called "dogs." Jesus spake this parable to show the Jews that though the Gentiles had been called later than themselves to the knowledge of God, yet that they should enjoy as great blessings as they did. God, like the householder in the parable, calls us to be his servants, and to work for him. We have all our appointed task; every one, even the poorest and youngest among us, has something to do, some work for which he must give account at the last day to God: children have to learn their duty, to be attentive, and obedient, and thankful, to

those who teach them. All have to overcome their faults, and endeavour, with the help of God's grace, to keep his commandments. You are called early to work in his vineyard, for you are now being taught your duty. But, remember, it is not enough to be "called:" if you neglect your calling, if you are careless about learning your duty, or, having learnt, neglect to do it, you will not be amongst the "chosen," who will be owned by their Saviour at the judgment-day.

Oh, doubt not God, for God is good;
He bought us with a Saviour's blood.
By day serve him: serve him by night;
And he will give to thee what's right.

Oh, trust in God, for God is love;
He sent us Christ from heaven above.
In prayer to him oh, bend thy knee,
And what is right he'll give to thee.

Into his vineyard speed thy way,
And labour there from day to day.
However poor thy help may be,
Whatever's right he'll give to thec.

Or shouldst thou labour long and hard,
Fear not but he will thee reward:
For all who to him try to live,
"Whatever's right," he says, "I'll give,"

LESSON SIXTH.

LUKE X. 25-37.

AND be-hold, a cer-tain law-yer stood up, and tempt-ed him, say-ing, "Mas-ter, what shall I do to in-her-it e-ter-nal life?" He said un-to him, "What is writ-ten in the law? how read-est thou ?" And he an-swer-ing, said, "Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy neigh-bour as thy-self." And he said unto him, "Thou hast an-swer-ed right, this do and thou shalt live." But he wil-ling to jus-ti-fy himself, said un-to Je-sus, "And who is my neigh-bour?" AndJe-susan-swer-ing, said, "A cer-tain man went down from Je-rusa-lem to Jer-i-cho, and fell a-mong thieves,

which strip-ped him of his rai-ment, and wound-ed him, and de-part-ed, leav-ing him half dead; and by chance there came down a cer-tain priest that way: and when he saw him, he pass-ed by on the oth-er side; and like-wise a Le-vite, when he was at the place, came and looked on him, and pass-ed by on the oth-er side. But a cer-tain Sa-mar-i-tan, as he journey-ed, came where he was, and when he saw him, he had com-pas-sion on him; and went to him, and bound up his wounds, pour-ing in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. And on the morrow, when he de-part-ed, he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said un-to him, 'Take care of him, and whatso-ev-er thou spend-est more, when I come a-gain, I will re-pay thee.' Which now of these three, think-est thou, was neighbour un-to him that fell a-mong the thieves ?" And he said "He that show-ed mercy on him." Then Je-sus said un-to him, "Go, and do thou like-wise."

QUESTIONS,

What question did the lawyer ask our Saviour?

"Master, what shall I do to inherit eternal life ?"

Did he ask this because he wished to learn of Christ?

No, he said it to tempt him; that is, to try and make him say something by which he could accuse him.

What was our Saviour's answer?

He asked him what was written in God's law.

What reply did he make?

"Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind, and thy neighbour as thyself."

Did he answer rightly?

Yes; our Saviour said, "Thou hast answered right, this do and thou shalt live." Did this satisfy the lawyer?

No. He said unto Jesus, "And who is my neighbour ?"
