Works in the Press. WORKS IN PREPARATION, BY MESSRS. LONGMAN AND CO. DR. URE has for a considerable period been engaged on "A DICTIONARY of ARTS, MANUFACTURES, and MINING," which is now in the press, and will form 1 very thick volume, 8vo. illustrated by a large number of Engravings on Wood, and is intended as a companion to Mr. M'Culloch's "Dictionary of Com(2136) merce and Commercial Navigation." DICTIONARY of SCIENCE, LITERATURE, and ART, including all the Technical Terms in common use-a work which has long been a desideratum-is now in the press, after several years' preparation. In reading, or in conversation, subjects are frequently discussed, and terms used, with which few persons are familiar: at the present period, too, when science has become of such universal interest, and when new inventions, founded on scientific principles, are almost every week brought under the notice of the public, a work wherein may be found information on all subjects, entirely to be relied upon, cannot fail to become extensively popular. This work is in fact intended to be a condensed and improved Cyclopædia, containing sufficently extended information on all subjects, adapted for immediate use; each department being undertaken by gentlemen whose names will be a sufficient guarantee for their accuracy. The following gentlemen are engaged in this work: Professor Brande, in Chemistry and all branches of T. Galloway, Esq. in Mathematics, Mechanics, and all Joseph Gwilt, Esq. in Architecture, Music, and the Dr. Lindley, in Botany; J. C. Loudon, Esq. in Gardening and Agriculture; DR. LINDLEY is about to publish a "FLORA MEDICA, or a Botanical Account of all the most remarkable Plants applied to Medical Practice in Great Britain and other Countries." The work will embrace the medicinal uses for which the plants are known, careful descriptions of them, an investigation of the evidence upon which officinal substances have been assigned to particular species, and an adjustment of the nomenclature to the most correct botanical standard. The work will be so numbered as to be capable of use as a Catalogue of the Medical Flants cultivated in Botanical Gardens, and printed in such a manner that the sequence of the matter may be varied at the pleasure of the reader.
