porated in alphabetical order in the first two volumes or body of the work, and the most popular meaning cited. This plan enables the reader to see at once whether the word wanted is given or not. If it be a supplemental word the short meaning may suit his purpose, or if not, he can then turn to the Supplement and peruse those dissertations which throw so much light upon the Literature, Antiquities, and Customs of Scotland.

This is universally admitted to be one of the most important lexicographical works published in any country, and has long maintained a high price in the book market.

14824 ALEXANDER (William) [EARL of STIRLING] The Tragedie of Darius, 1601-The Alexandraean Tragedy, 1607-Tragedie of Julius Caesar, 1607-Tragedie of Croesus, no tille,? 1607Paraenesis to the Prince, 1604-Aurora, containing the first fancies of the Author's youth (Sonnets), 1601-in 1 vol. sm. 4to. hf. russia, rare, £9 Elde and Field, 1604-7

These beautiful Poems are so very rare that but few collections contain them. They are scarcely Scottish Literature, but as the work of a Scottish poct, may take their place here; although the works of James I, and Gawin Douglas (Virgil), have appeared in the catalogue of English Literature. In the Darius, Act iii, Sc. 3, some lines of the Persiau king's soliloquy bear a strong resemblance to the celebrated passage in the Tempest, beginning with "The cloud capped towers." The Tempest, in all probability, was written subsequently to Darius, so that Shakspeare appears to have borrowed the idea from Lord Stirling. The lines in Darius begin with "Let greatnesse of her glascie scepters vaunt."

It appears from this little book that the sale of stale medicines and adulterated drugs is not a modern practice: and it meutions that "It is the custome. in Germanie and Italie, that every yeare the Colledge of Medicine visit all Apothecarie shops, and whatsoever is fuisted,

corrupted, falsified or any wayes sophisticate, they throw them out"! This custom might profitably be introduced into our own country at the present day.
