died in 1576; being the text to illustrate the above Maps, folio, 20 pp. lithographed, sewed

1862

Containing an authentic description of Ireland from the time of Henry II, and giving the princes and chiefs, with details of their troops, resources, etc.

VIEW of the Siege of Enniskillen, 1592, taken from McGuire by Capt. Dowdall, facsimile of the original plan "made and dun by John Thomas, Soldier," a very curious plan on a large sheet, representing an episode of Elizabeth's Wars in Ireland 1862 These Maps possess much interest, as exhibiting the titles from the Crown of the landed proprietary of the present day in Ulster.

the preliminary leaf of Introduction, by Hans C. Hamilton, 2 pp. large folio, 10s. 1862 -the above Maps and text, bound together in 1 vol. large folio, complete, the Maps coloured, hf. calf, gilt edges, rare, £10., 10s

1862

The leaf of Introduction is indispensable to the possessors of copies of this important historical work, as it contains a general list of Contents, and a letter from Sir Thomas Bodley to the Lord High Treasurer Salisbury, describing the method of survey adopted in forming these maps, and pointing out the value of them clearly and concisely.

Two of the additional pieces are out of print, and rare.

Rarely found complete; the present copy has a facsimile of Map No. 7, and most of the sheets are mounted and mended. It is therefore marked a very low price, and is a bargain for the student of Irish Topography.

Agr., 1762-72

£8. 88

One of the most interesting volumes relating to the History of Ireland. The Supplement, comprising pp. 799-950, is of extreme rarity. Although the title bears the imprint of Cologne, it has been clearly ascertained that it was produced under the author's inspection, by a printer named Edmund Finn, at Kilkenny in Ireland.

In most copies of Burke's Hibernia Dominicana, five leaves, pp. 137-146 inclusively, are wanting, having been SUPPRESSED BY AUTHORITY: this copy has those castrations, which are of very rare occurrence. They contain a sketch of James II's expulsion, and of the fortunes of his son and grandson, as well as a statement that the Prince of Orange ordered over 1000 wounded prisoners, taken at the Siege of Limerick, to be burnt alive.

15079 CAREY (M.) Vindicia Hibernice, or Ireland Vindicated, an attempt

Many copies of this work are supposed to have been destroyed in the Fire of London. The above fine copy is from the library of Sir Edward Nicolas.

[Paris] Superiorum permissu, 1676

EXTREMELY RARE, there being only seven or eight copies known. The Unkind Deserter was the great Duke of Ormond, whose picture is drawn with such merciless vindictiveness in this little volume-the Secret History of the War in Ireland, 1645-47-that the powerful family of the Butlers bought up and destroyed every copy they could lay hands upon.

Towneley's copy fetched £31. 10s; Lord Lansdowne's £21; Hanrott's £15; Gardner's, in 1854, £12; and the last one sold, which was disposed of at Sotheby's in 1863, brought £13. 138.

15094 Gaelic Songs. A collection of transcripts made by and for the late John O'Daly, of Songs and Ballads, in Gaelic, by Irish lyrists of the 16th and 17th centuries, with many letters from

local celebrities of the south of Ireland, full of curious and recondite lore, contained within eight 4to. bookcovers, £5 1830-50

Most of these were written down from the oral dictation of peasants; and are accompanied by letters from the transcribers to O'Daly, generally characteristic of a keen philological and linguistic sense on the part of the correspondents, although not always men of fair English education. He seems to have published several of the songs in numbers, but shrewd criticism is passed upon him in these letters, and apt corrections suggested.
