SALAZARO, STUDI SUI MONUMENTI DELL' ITALIA MERIDIONALE dal 4o. al 130. Secolo, impl. folio, 60 magnificent plates, partly in Chromolithography, partly Photographic, to be published in 26 Dispense, each containing three sheets of text and two plates, price 15 shillings each Napoli, 1872-77 Uniform with the "CASE di POMPEI" of NICOLINI. Mr. Demetrio Salazaro is the Inspector of the National Museum of Naples, and has long been engaged upon the subject of this very important work. It was till recently the opinion of most critics, based upon the dictum of Vasari, that Italian Art began its existence with Cimabue and Giotti, towards the commencement of the Fourteenth Century. However, more diligent and accurate researches, promoted by German scholarship, and carried out to the fullest extent by Mr. Salazaro himself, have estab lished that a regular School of Italian Art, not indeed displaying the perfected beauty and grace that are seen in the productions of the fourteenth century, but still marked by the gradual growth and development of the artistic ideal, existed in Southern Italy before the days of Cimabue, and was the genuine parent of that later culture which reached its highest grandeur in Da Vinci, Michel Angelo, and Raffaelle. To the illustration of this subject, as exemplified in the Art-monuments of the country executed between the fourth and thirteenth centuries, the magnificent work above mentioned has been undertaken. As the first great essay of its kind, the importance and value of the "Monumenti dell' Italia Meridionale" must be obvious to every amateur and student of the History of Art. Sixteen parts are now ready.

These Documents are selected from the MSS. in the General Register House, Edinburgh, the Public Record Office, London, the Advocates' Library, Edinburgh, the British Museum, Private Charter Rooms, and other sources, and throw much interesting light on the commencement of an important branch of National industry.

The Documents connected with the search after the precious Metals in Scotland commence with the earliest recorded find of Gold at Duriness in Sutherland, in 1245, and come down to the last official notice of the Gold Mines in Scotland in 1652. Copious selections from the original accounts of the Silver Mines in Linlithgowshire will also be found.

The earliest notice of Coal Mining occurs between 1210 and 1219, and the various legislative enactments on this subject are fully noticed.

The Documents preserved in the Balcarres Papers in the Advocates' Library give much curious information relating to Mining in Scotland in the Sixteenth Century, and are printed for the first time.

Amsterdam, 1647-50 The first Atlas of Scotland is contained in the above portion of this celebrated compilation, and owes its existence to the exertions of Sir John Scot, of Scotstarvet. Not only did he contribute a great amount of information to the text, and pay for the engraving of the plates and their revision by Scottish Geographers, Robert Gordon and his son, but to enrich the work, he tried a plan which met with more success 150 years later. The Synod of Scotland was prevailed upon to request the ministers to supply each a description of their respective parishes. "Mais cette ordonnance, n'estant accompagnée ny de prix ny de punition, pour accourager à y obeir, elle a esté negligée par la plus grand' part d'eux." Among those who did reply was a Mr. Lauder.
