2. Sometimes angry passions rising,
Drive away our peace of mind;
O, 'tis strange, 'tis quite surprising,
That we are not always kind!
If we cherish good affections,
And our parents' will obey;
If we follow the directions

Of our teachers through the day;

3. If our spirit, meekness learning,
Unto God its homage give;
Like the modest violet, turning

To the sky its azure leaves ;-
Then we never need be fearful:

As the gentle lamb and dove,
We are happy, we are cheerful,
When our hearts are full of love!

TWENTIETH SERVICE.

I. THE DUTY OF FORGIVENESS.

Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered.

Blessed is the man unto whom the Lord imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile.

Rejoice the soul of thy servant; for unto thee, O Lord, do I lift up my soul.

For thou, Lord, art good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy unto all them that call upon thee.

II. L. M.

My dear Redeemer and my Lord,

I read my duty in thy word;

But in thy life thy law appears

Drawn out in living characters.

III. SCRIPTURE LESSON.

MATT. XVIII.

Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me and I forgive him? till seven times?

Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times, but until seventy times seven.

Therefore is the kingdom of heaven likened unto a certain king, which would take account of his servants.

And when he had begun to reckon, one was brought unto him which owed him ten thousand talents.

But forasmuch as he had not to pay, his lord commanded him to be sold, and his wife, and children, and all that he had, and payment to be made.

The servant therefore fell down and worshipped him, saying, Lord, have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.

Then the lord of that servant was moved with compassion, and loosed him, and forgave him the debt.

But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellow-servants which owed him a hundred pence; and he

laid hands on him, and took him by the throat, saying, Pay me that thou owest.

And his fellow-servant fell down at his feet and besought him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay thee all.

And he would not; but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay the debt.

So when his fellow-servants saw what was done, they were very sorry, and came and told unto their lord all that was done.

Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him, O thou wicked servant, I forgave thee all that debt, because thou desiredst me:

Shouldest not thou also have had compassion on thy fellow-servant, even as I had pity on thee?

And his lord was wroth, and delivered him to the tormentors, till he should pay all that was due unto him. So likewise shall my heavenly Father do also unto you, from your hearts forgive not every one his brother their trespasses.

V. PRAYER.

OUR Father in heaven, we thank thee that we

are permitted to pray to thee; to tell thee what is in our hearts, to confess to thee all our sins and wrong-doing, and feel that thou wilt hear us, and forgive us, and bless us. O Lord, ever kind and merciful, we know that we do many things which we ought not to do; that we are often guilty of anger, and ill-feeling, and unthankfulness; that we have many times offended against thee, and against our parents, and given pain to those who love us. But we praise thee that they have so kindly forgiven us our offences, and that thou, of thy great mercy, dost pardon our transgressions against thee.

O, our Father, we feel that it is our duty to forgive those who trespass against us, as thou forgivest us our trespasses against thee. Teach us, Lord, to love our enemies, to do good to those who hate us, and to pray for those who despitefully use us. Give us the love of Jesus, who prayed for his murderers on the cross, and help us to feel that we ought to follow him in all things, that we may honor his holy religion. Gracious Father, fill our hearts with the spirit of his forgiveness toward all who offend us or speak evil against us, or do us any kind of injury, so that we may be truly his disciples. And through him we will give to thee all the praise and the glory forever. Amen.
