PUBLISHERS' PREFACE.

ENCOURAGED by the welcome reception given to the previous editions of the "ALTAR," and by the solicitation of many Clergymen, and others interested in the SundaySchool, we issue this NEW AND ENLARGED EDITION, containing thirty-six additional pages of Hymns and Tunes of a character well adapted for young voices. In the selection and arrangement of this addition, we acknowledge the kind assistance of W. H. BALDWIN (Superintendent of the Sunday-School of the Church of the Unity), whose long experience in the Sunday-School, gives him a superior knowledge of its wants in this direction.

For the benefit of those who may not be familiar with the use of the Liturgy, a word of explanation may be needed. The selection from the Psalms, with which cach service opens, is intended to be read by the Superintendent, in order to fix the attention of the school, after which all should unite in singing the opening hymn. The Scripture Lesson and the Prayer should be read in concert by the whole school, the Superintendent leading. The other parts of the opening service sufficiently explain themselves.
