39 These [things] ye shall do unto the Lord in your set feasts, beside your vows, and your free will offerings, for

. your burnt offerings, and for your meat offerings, and for your

40 drink offerings, and for your peace offerings. And Moses told the children of Israel, according to all that the Lord, commanded Moses.

1 AND Moses spake unto the heads of the tribes concernXl. ing the children of Israel, saying, This [is] the thing

2 which the Lord hath commanded. If a man vow a vow unto the Lord, or swear an oath to bind his soul with a bond;

[graphic][merged small][merged small]

he shall not break his word, he shall do according to all that proceedeth out of his mouth.

3 If a woman also vow a vow unto the Lord, and bind [herself]

4 by a bond, [being] in her father's house in her youth: And her father hear her vow, and her bond wherewith she hath bound her soul, and her father shall hold his peace at her: then all her vows shall stand, and every bond wherewith she

5 hath bound her soul shall stand. But if her father disallow her in the day that he heareth; not any of her vows, or of her bonds wherewith she hath bound her soul, shall stand: and the Lord shall forgive her, because her father disallowed her.

* And if she had at all an husband when she vowed, or utter

7 ed aught out of her lips, wherewith she bound her soul; And her hushand heard [it,] and held his peace at her in the day that he heard [it :] then her vows shall stand, and her bonds

8 wherewith she bound her soul shall stand. But if her husband disallowed her on the day that he heard [it ;] then he shall make her vow which she vowed, and that which she uttered with her lips, wherewith she bound her soul, of none effect:

9 and the Lord shall forgive her. But every vow of a widow, and of her that is divorced, wherewith they have bound their souls shall stand against her.

10 And if she vowed in her husband's house, or bound her soul

11 by a bond with an oath; And her husband heard [it,] and held his peace at her, [and] disallowed her not: then all her vows shall stand, and every bond wherewith she bound her

12 soul shall stand. But if her husband hath utterly made them void on the day he heard [them; then] whatsoever proceeded out of her lips concerning her vows, or concerning the bond of her soul, shall not stand: her husband hath made

13 them void; and the Lord shall forgive her. Every vow, and every binding oath to afflict the soul, her husband may estab

14 lish it, or her husband may make it void. But if her husband altogether hold his peace at her from day to day ; then he establisheth all her vows, or all her bonds, which [are] upon her: he confirmeth them, because he held his peace at her

15 in the day that he heard [them.] But if he shall any ways make them void after that he hath heard [them ;] then he

18 shall bear her iniquity. These [are] the statutes, which the Lord commanded Moses between a man and his wife, be* tween the father and his daughter, [being yet] in her youth ia her father's house.

CHAP. XXXI.

The Midianitea are spoiled; Salaam slain ; and Moses is angry with the officers for saving the women alive.

1 A ND the Lord spake unto Moses, saying, Avenge the

2 JLJL children of Israel of the Midianites: afterward shalt

3 thou be gathered unto thy people.* And Moses, to see who would be most ready to execute the divine commission, spake unto the people, saying, Arm some of yourselves unto the •war, and let them go against the Midianites, and avenge the

4 Lord of Midian. Of every tribe a thousand, throughout all

5 the tribes of Israel, shall ye send to the war. So there were delivered out of the thousands of Israel, a thousand of [every] tribe, twelve thousand armed for war, who offered themselves

6 freely. And Moses sent them to the war, a thousand of [every] tribe ; so many from each., to prevent any jealousy ; and not any more, to exercise their faith in God, who can save by few as well as by many: he sent them and Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, to the war, with the holy instruments, and, or even, the trumpets to blow in his hand.

7 And they warred against the Midianites, as the Lord commanded Moses ; and they slew all the males, which they came up with; but many escaped, and vexed Israel in the days of

8 Gideon. And they slew the kings of Midian, beside the rest of them that were slain; [namely,] Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, five kings of Midian, all tributary to Sihon king of the Amoriles, as we find in Joshua xiii. 21. Balaam also the son of Beor they slew with the sword ; he either staid among the Midianites, or, hearing of the destruction of the Israelites by the plague, came back to see, and promote their ruin, and died among the Midianites, but not, as he had former

9 ly wished, the death of the righteous. And the children of Israel took [all] the women of Midian captives, and their little ones, and took the spoil of all their cattle, and all their flocks,

10 and all their goods. And they burnt all their cities wherein

11 they dwelt, and all their goodly castles, with fire.f And they took all the spoil, and all the prey, [both] of men and of

12 beasts. And they brought the captives, Me women and children, and the prey, their cattle and flocks, and the spoil, their gold and silver, unto Moses and Eleazar the priest, and unto the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the camty at the plains of Moab, which [are] by Jordan [near] Jericho.

* As the Midianites had drawn them into sin, and by that showed themselves to be their worst enemies, they are commanded to be destroyed while Moses lived, that he might •ee justice done to this enemy, and that farther occasion of sin to Israel might be removed.

t The Chaldee says, their temple:, strong places, where they had gods of gold and silver.
